DAWES MAY OPEN HIS CAMPAIGN AT EVANSTONTONIGHT Neighbors to Hold 'Reception in Honor of Vice Presidential Nominee, Bu Vnitai Prats CHICAGO, June IT.—Charles G. Dawes, Republican vice presidential nominee, may open his campaign tonight at reception to be tendered him on the east grounds of his Evanston home where several thousand residents of Evanston plan to gather in their first formal demonstration since Dawes was named President Coolidge's running mate. William M. Butler, chairman of the national Republican committee, is here and will attend. Conference Held Butler has been in conference with Dawes since Monday noon, mapping out tentative plans for the nominee's speaking tour and arranging for opening of national campaign headquarters in Chicago. Dawes will make an address and do some handshaking tonight. Butler also may deliver a brief address. Tentative plans for the campaign call for Dawes to spend most of his time in the agricultural belt. His special car will range the restless agricultural country, with occasional jaunts East and to the West. Butler Satisfied Butler referred briefly to the reported dissatisfaction of C. Bascom Slemp, secretary to President Coolidge. with the way in which Butler has been conducting affairs. ‘‘l am glad that every one appears satisfied,” Butler said when he was told that Slemp had announced he was not going to resign. ‘T am delighted that Mr. Slemp will remain in his present place.” LAUNDRYMAN IN FOILS Thrilled Pedestrians, Says Officer— Truck and Bundies Go to Jail. ANDERSON LIKELY COOLIE CHOICE FOR CHICAGO JOB Candidates for Local Bench May Be ‘Kidded’ Until After Fall Election, The successor to the late Judge Francis E. Baker, former member of the United States Circuit Court of Appeals at Chicago, who died several months ago, probably will not be named by President Coolidge until after election, it is indicated. It is believed Judge Albert B. Anderson Federal judge for the Indiana district, will be named for the place, but those familiar with the political situation say Republican affairs in Hoosierdom are in such a state of chaos as to make a choice at this time unwise on the eve of a. presidential campaign. Candidates for Judge Anderson’s position in swarms, schools, bevies, herds shoals, troops and bunches have appeared from every nook and corner of the State. That prospective appointee me’ es a fine political supporter, while a disappointed office seeker is a source of endless trouble, is an ancient political adage. Therefore the policy of President Coolidge will he to “kid” the army of prospective Federal judges along until after election, politicians say. Then it will be too late for the thousand and one disappointed candi dates for the job to indulge in any plain and fancy double crossing of the Republican presidential ticket.
