MONDELL SCORES ‘ENEMY’; PRAISES HARDING, COOLIOGE Need of Republican Majority Stressed by Permanent Chairman, Bu United Prm s CONVENTION HALL, CLEVELAND, June 11.—Frank W. Mondell of Wyoming lauded Harding and Coolidge and scored the Democrats for their “partisan purposes” in a speech delivered as he took the chair as permanent- chairman of the Republican convention today. Mondell. in part, said: ‘‘We are met as the representatives of a great political party that has never failed or faltered in its service or loyalty to the republic; that has never proposed nor advocated an unwise or unsound national policy and it is our privilege on behalf of this party to place in nomination for the highest office in the gift of the American people, candidates who shall measure up to the finest standards of party leadership and who shall be entitled to and, we confidently believe, will receive the support of a large majority of the American voters at the polls in November. ‘‘We meet profoundly appreciative of wise, patriotic and inspiring party leadership in the past and earnestly thankful that the kindly Providence and the great good fortune, which gave our party and the Nation Lincoln, McKinley, and Harding, has vouchsafed us as the wealthy successor of these distinguished patriots the confidence-in-spiring character of Calvin Coolidge. Harding Lauded ‘‘The American people placed the stamp of their approval on the candidates of the last Republican national convention by a majority of more than five and a half million. Time and events have abundantly justified that paralleled indorsement “He who was chosen as the party standard bearer proved his statesmanship in the skillful handling and wise adjustment of important and weighty domestic and international questions and problems. "How well he fitted and became the great office to which he was chosen! History will write his name high on the role of able and efficient executives, but we who know and loved him best will cherish most the recollection of his great and kindly heart, his tender and sympathetic soul. SCHOOL BOARD TO STUDY REPORT Superintendent's Appointments for Year Considered, The instruction committee of the Indianapolis school board was to meet at 3 p. m. today to study the report of Superintendent Graff on teachers’ appointments for the coming school year. How come? For the second time within a week street cars have left their set route along the crooked rails and started on a little journey along the nice, rough asphalt. Tuesday as the downtown toilers were journeying to their domiciles one of the Indianapolis Street Railways’ finest left the north-bound track at Twenty-Sceond St. and started to run west on Twenty-Sec-ond St., sans the rails. Its trip was cut short after the rear vestibule made a wide parabola and smashed into an automqbile parked at (he curb. Several days ago a southbound car jumped the track at TwentyFourth, St. No injuries were reported in either of the mishaps. Marks of an escapade of a street car seven years ago can still be seen in the 2400 block when a street car on the southbound track obeyed the impulse to turn east suddenly. At that time one woman was slightly injured. NEW CHURCH PLANNED Irvington Scientists Petition Edifice at Pleasant Run and Market St. A f>etition for permission to construct a modern Church of Christ, Scientist, at the northeast corner of Pleasant Run Pkwy. and Market St. is being considered by the city plan commission. The structure will he similar to other churches of that denomination, Robert I. Harsh, attorney, said. It will be known as the Fourth Church of Christ Scientist. One kind is here working for their ideals and the men they love. The other k’nd is here working for themselves- . I do not know which kind is in the greatest number. But lam not worried, because I know that the men who are moved by their ideals can do so much more than any others. When a man does something for himself, people know it. Those things can’t be kept secret. And when a man does something for someone else, every one knows that, too, and they know he must have -good reasons to do it. President Coolidge is the kind of man who has a hard time doing something for himself. Even when he was making campaign speeches in Massachusetts he did not talk about himself. But when the people got to know Coolidge they elected him by large majorities. If Coolidge's name was submitted to the"people of the Nation they would elect him today. That is because the people know him and they know that he is not seeking things for himself, but is working for the country.

That brings to my mind the faults of the convention system. Conventions are good tilings in many ways. They get people together from different parts of the country where they can exchange views. But I think it would he best if the president was elected by popular vote just as the Senators are. It would be fairer because it would show just what the country thought of each man and it would permit a man who was loved by the people to win without having to make two campaigns. Now a candidate must make two campaigns, one before the convention and one before the final elec-, tion. This may take a man away from his duties too long. Os course, President Coolidge has not been taken away from his office for the campaign. But a man so loved as he, would be elected at the primaries. Now all this sounds as if I am very much in favor of Coolidge. I have known him ever since he was a young man and I have learned about his character. I know that he is a fine, good man. first, considerable emphasis on the love making, mating and family life among the animals, and second, no special effort to put the support of human mating upon religious sanctions. “These departures grow out of a single reason: all these personal and social dualities and activities involved in love and family life arose and took essentially their present form, first among higher animals and later among men, long before religion itself appeared. In other words, there are basic elements in this adjustment older than any religious sanctions. “This does not mean that religious sup* ->rt is not most valuable for wise soh dons of sex-social problems. It means only that these solutions are equally binding upon the unbeliever and the believer in religious values. The advantage for the latter is that he has an added sense of obligation.” In discussing courtship, before and after marriage.
