PAPER OF TODAY IS LIKENED 10 SANDSOF TIES Newsprint Ages Quickly and Historian Fears Modern Records May Be Lost. Someone is always referring' to the footprints on the sand of Time. Little do they reek that where there is sand there must be sea, and where there is sea there must be waves and that sea waves have a cute little predilection for washing out said footprints. In the old days, aboriginal man placed little faith in such poetical fallacies and consequently carved his records in the rocks. Today, therefore, although we parody the caveman stuff beyond all reason, we have the records of his existence clearly before us. The chap that wrote the history of his race in sand is simply nil. Statehouse officials cite such a parable for the guidance of those who would have the records of the State preserved. Back in the old days, 100 years ago. the Auditor of State, for instance, knew his stuff. The paper he used is still intact and the j ink extremely legible. Some of these ancient records, especially the land grants, are perused every day by i George Cheney, land clerk. But j they stand the strain of handling. No, No, Not Sandpaper As for the paper used today. State officials fix its average life j at fifteen years. In other words, present records are being inscribed on sand. “The only disappointment." says j Cheney, “is the fact that these old ! records, well preserved as they are, | are fact of little use. The offi- . cers used to put part of their rec- ! ords in the books and part they kept j in their heads.” The State library is also worried ! over newspaper files. Take any bound newspaper in the library of ] fifteen years ago. attempt to turn a page by taking hold of a corner of it and the corner turns to dust in your hands. But take, for instance, the library's copy of the Western Sun for June 23, 1812, and the oldfashioned rag paper is tougher and more durable after 112 years than the newspaper upon which our daily papers are printed. Good Paper Too Expensive "Good durable paper is too expensive for newspaper use in this age of quantity production," says Miss Esther McXitt, assistant director, : history department of the State li- ; brary. “And we could hardly ex- ; pect our local papers to print for us a special library edition of their daily paper on special paper. It would cost too much. The New York Times is trying it but it’s expensive business. It’s simply one of those problems no one has yet solved practicably.” No one questions the necessity of keeping State official records intact. But newspapers also come in for a serious consideration. For instance. Miss McXitt points out, only the early part of the last century of Indiana history' is complete. The newspapers hold the details since that time. It is perhaps fortunate that up until the last twen-ty-five years has newsprint been of curable qualifv. But in years to come, by the looks of the present state of the ten-year-old papers, the historian will have a serious problem before him, trying to rewrite the history of the State from a pile of yellowed dust.
COLLEGE GIRLS HELPWORKERS Send Eight to School —Take Their Jobs, By I'nitnl Prrxx MADISON, Wis., June 10. —Two girls from a shoe factory, one from a cafeteria, two office workers, a clerk and two from domestic service will be given a term this year in the Wisconsin Summer School, without cost to themselves. The opportunity is due to the work of a small group of '‘co-eds” at the University of Wisconsin. Th y raised the money to provide scholarships for the eight girls, including all tuition and expenses. Diving quarters for these girls have been set aside at Barnard Hall, the finest dormitory the university beasts. But the college girls will go further. So that these girls from offices and factories will not lose their jobs while at school, their employers have been interviewed nd their consent secured to have volunteers among the college girls take over the workers’ jobs for the sixweeks’ term. Disappearance Is Mystery Mystery still surrounds disappearance of Ernest Southern, 15, of 239 W. Twenty-First St., who left home early Sunday. Police are unable to unravel the story related by his buddy, Allen McMillan, 15, of 1350 W. McCarty St., who returned his clothes wet and muddy to Mrs. Southern 6 a. m. Monday. Youngster Struck by Auto Deonard Gordon, 3, of 323 S. East St., was cut on the forehead when he was knocked to the pavement at Virginia andj Fletcher Aves. by an auto driven by Clifford Hurst. 113 S. Oriental St. Police arrested Hurst and took the injured boy home. II C. S. Official Elected C. C. Hanch, a representative of H. C.
