OLD GUARD ON SIDE LINES AT G. MEETING New Englander Directs Convention Business as Bosses Look On. By LOWELL MELLETT, Times Staff Correspondent CLEVELAND, Ohio, June 9 Cleveland today heard a noise like a national convention, the first such noise thus far, and John J. Blaine Os Wisconsin is the hero of the town, that part of the town, at least, which has been hoping something would happen, into a dull, dead sea of apathy the sturdy fighting faced executive from La Follette's State dropped a depth bomb and the water that spouted up hasn't all come down yet. When it does come down it may wash the Wisconsin delegation clear out of the convention, for it didn't make the convention managers happy. Elsewhere in your newspaper you can read a description of Blaine's bomb, for the famished correspondent's seized upon it as the one bit of real news thus far produced by the convention, but consider here the effect. Old Guard There First, the old guard, bear in mind that the old guard is here in almost it's usual number's even though it hasn't yet had anything to do with the job of nominating the candidate and framing the platform. Coolidge, while apparently sticking steadfast ly to the principles of the old guard, has succeeded in dispensing with practically all of the old personnel. Jim Watson, for instance, when the boy's ask him whose to be Vice President, replies mournfully “Butler hasn't told us yet.” The old guard is going to carry out the program. but it is having as much to do with the framing of the program as will the Wisconsin delegation. The only difference is that the old guard is taking the steam rolling the La Follette delegation is not. The boy's of the old guard don't quite understand why so many things are happening to them, but their training prevents them from protesting. Well, the old guard members are secretly tickled to appreciation over the resolutions given out this morning by the Wisconsin Governor. For one thing, these resolutions support many things done or attempted by the United States Congress, with many of the old guard participating, and defeated or opposed by President Coolidge. For another, they are just plain glad to have somebody say to this new machine that has taken their places some of the things they w-ould like to say themselves, but daren't. Not Pleased They are not so w'ell pleased, of course, that they intend to support the resolutions when they are offered in the convention. No, they will join in the processes of suppression when the time comes. Several indicated as much today. For public consumption they affected scorn and amusement. The resolutions are entirely out of place, they said. But newspaper readers ought to know that even if the old guard members one day this week join with the new guard in kicking the Wisconsin delegates out of the convention, their heart won’t really be in the performance. Next the effect on the new guard. The new guard is composed of William M. Butler, the Coolidge picked chairman. Mr. Butler, at the time this dispatch was written, said exactly what he has had to say about other important matters — exactly nothing. Then the effect on the common folks. They liked it. It forecast ;i fight sometime during the week and even the antiepation of a fight is better then the hopless prospect that faced the ticket-buyers as recently as yesterday. T’ne common folk's are correct, for, despite the moderate language in which the Wisconsin resolutions are couched they will simply raise heck when they are read to the proceedings of the conventions.
