DEMOCRATS DENY KLAN BACKING IN RACEFOR OFFICE Candidates Prepare for State Convention, Opening Wednesday. With Memorial Day observance and the Speedway race out of the way, politics began “looking up" about Democratic State headquarters today. Miss Gertrude McHugh, State secretary, is swamped with details of the State convention, Wednesday and Thursday and additional clerks have been pressed into service to aid in pre-convention work. Senator Samuel M. Rlaston wato come from Washington today for the convention. Practically all candidates for State offices have notified headquarters they will be on hand “bright and early” Monday morning to open headquarters on the eighth floor of the Clay pool. “A political trick,” “Unauthorized" and “Absolutely false” were some of the terms used by candidates with a purported Ku-Klux Klan slate said to have been circulated from Klan headquarters. Jeffersonian Democrat Perry Easton, Sandborn, candidate for treasurer of State, today vigorously denied that he was a member of the Klan or that he ever had authorized his name be placed on any Klan slate. “I am a Jeffersonian Democrat, first, last and always,” Easton said, “and if any Democratic delegates want to cast their ballots for me as Democrats I welcome them. As for mv being a Klan candidate and a member of that organization, It is absolutely untrue.” ( In a letter to The Indianapolis Times today, John Etzold, Indianapolis, candidate for reporter of the Supreme Court, whose name was on the alleged Klan slate, said: “Think of it. A Lutheran being a candidate on a slate made up by the Ku-Klux Klan. May I be permitted to indulge for a moment in lighter vein and say, ‘Oh, boy, ain t it rich?’ Looks like some wag h; l been succeeding admirably. Bracken in Denial “tYankly, I surely should not object to being placed on a slate of that kind, for I believe in giving the devil his due, and although the Klan >s frequently wondered at, surprised at, ogled at, sworn a., it is by no means to be sneezed at. If there is anything in signs, it would he foolish to pretend otherwise, but if any slates are made up by the Klan. it is to be presumed it would include members of the organization only.” Robert W. Bracken, auditor of State and candidate for re-election, Friday denied he was a member of the Klan and said he knew nothing of the alleged slate.

Fearing recurrence of a nervous disorder, Miss Lena Schwartz, 24, New York school teacher, jumped from a six-story apartment house on the eve of her wedding day. Modernists won two important victories in the Northern Baptist convention at Milwaukee in the overwhelming defeat of the fundamentalist confession of faith, and proposal of a staff of officers, mostly modernists, by the nominating committee. Merging of the Milwaukee Evening Sentinel and the IV isconsin News has been announced at Milwaukee. The Sunday Sentinel and the Milwaukee Telegram have also joined together. Jingo newspapers are working Japan into a frenzy and anti-Ameri-can demonstrations are occurring, according to Tokio dispatches. SENATE REFUSED DAUGHERTY BOONS BY OHIO COURT Protest Against Submitting Bank's Data to Probe Is Upheld. By United Press CINCINNATI. Ohio, May 31.—Mai Daugherty of Washington Court House, Ohio, was granted a writ of habeas corpus by Judge A. M. J. Cochran in United States district court today in his atempt to avoid testifying before the Senate committee investigating the administration of his brother. Harry M. Daugherty, former attorney general. This means Daugherty, whose bank records were sought by Senate probers, need not produce them for scrutiny by the committee. Senate Is Criticised Judge Cochran held that the only ground upon which Mai Daugherty’s arrest by the Senate could be approved was that of impeachment of the former attorney general. He held, however, that the Senate can only try and not impeach officials of the Government. “It is not within the Senate's province to harass, annoy, put in fear, render unfit or possibly drive from office any such officer, high or low, by instituting impeachment proceedings against him. “The sole power which the Sen ate has in the matter of impeachment is to try such proceedings. It should act thereon as judge, not as prosecutor." “As I view the matter the Senate has usurped judicial power and encroached on the prerogative of the House of Representatives. Grants Judgment “There is nothing else for me to do but to adjudge that the petitioner (Mallery S. Daugherty) is entitled to his discharge and a judgment jvill be entered to that effect.” Mai Daugherty filed his petition for the habeas corups writ following his arrest here recently by John J. McGrain, deputy sergeant-at-arms. Newsy Is Held Alex Discont, 21, Omaha, Neb., was held by police today on false pretense and vagrancy charges. He was selling 3-cent newspapers for 5 cents, police say.
