FISH AND GAME ! DUN SHOWS GAIN IN RECEIPTS Disbursements Boosted by Construction of New Hatchery at Avoca, A semi annual report of the fish and game division of the State conservation department from Oct. 1. 1923 to April 1. 1924, shows total receipts of $131,606. with disburse ments of $85,093. against $117,455. receipts, and $58,819. disbursements for the same period last year. The net gain of $14,120 in receipts is due to a more intensive cooperation between the public and the division, and the $26,275, increase in disbursements this year was caused by construction of a new hatchery at Avoca. Lawrence County, with cost of a larger forcp of game wardens. George X. Mann feld. division superintendent, ex plains. The Avoca hatchery will be completed this year, it is said. 998 Are Arrested The division issued 135,920 license the first six months this year against 123,137 in the same period a year previous, showing a net gain of 12,783. Arrests totalled 998 as against 813 last year. The number of fees from fines collected was , 1.032 as against 767. or a gain of ?65, showing more activity on the part of the warden force, the report adds. There were 946 persons convicted in the last six months. They paid fines and costs aggregating $18,923. For the same period the year previous 777 convicted persons paid fines and costs amounting to $15.441. Arrests and convictions made in the six months of the present fiscal year are nearly three times more than wardens made in aft entire year under the old department. Mannfeld points out. License Sales Double The annual license sales have J nearly doubled. In 1918, 92,666; licenses were issued. In six months i this year the department issued j 135.920 licenses. By October, department officials expect to have j issued at least 185,ft00 or double the number issued in the fiscal year of 1918.
U. S. SPY SYSTEM TO BE ABOLISHED, STONE DECLARES ♦ Will Hire Lawyers and Not Sleuths —Burns’ Job Kept Vacant. Time * Wnith’npton Bureau, 1.1t2 Trie York Are. WASHINGTON, May 30.—Attorney General Stone's remodeling of the bureau of investigation of the Department of Justice is under way. Stone is determined to convert what was rapidly growing into a na-tion-wide “spy system" to a bureau that will be of real service to the Government. Stone declared today that he was going to insist that the future bureau conform to three principles. Legal Cases Oply "The first is that I am going to limit investigations to the preparation of legal cases. The second is that I am against any increase of the bureau beyond these needs and the third is that I am insisting that incompetents be weeded out and that before any new appointments are made T will pass on them myself," Stone stated. He indicated that for the present he would continue to direct the operations of the bureau himself. The bureau was left without a director by the recent resignation of William J. Bums Many Should Be Fired Now that Burns has gone a few things about the department are becoming known. Edward Bohner. chief of the Washington field office of the bureau, testified before the Senate committee investigating former Attorney General Daugherty, that there are a great many persons in the department who ought to be, fired. He made this statement when Chairman Brookhart called attention to criticism of the bureau made by John C. Crim, former assistant attorney general. “Unfortunately, what Mr. Crim has said is true. There are a lot of persons in the department that should be fired.” Bohner declared. Previously Crim had recommended that the burden ought to he abolished unless every agent was a trained lawyer.

ADVICE TO JUNE GRADUATES ‘Law Profession Needs Men of High Calibre ’
SAMUEL J. i:\TKRMEVER, NEW YORK ATTORNEY, BELIEVES THERE IS CHANCE FOR PROMISX ING ASPIRANTS.
mAM of the opinion that the qualifications required for success in tiie practice of the profession of law are now of such a specialized and exacting character that if applied to business activities they would lead to a great measure of material" success. * I would not advise a young man or woman to enter the profession without a thorough education rare industry and a keen analytical mind. A young jnan' or woman without social or business ties or influence that would secure him other business is not likely to earn more than a bare living for the first five years after graduation A five year’s clerkship in a busy office is a prerequite to eventual success. By “eventual success" I mean moderate success. The financial returns that accompany that kind of success vary greatly in the different, sections of the country. In New York City, the returns vary according to the particular branch of the law prac ticed by the person. At tlfe criminal bar there is very little opportunity for material success. So far as concerns opportunity, there never was A time when there were greater opportunities in my profession for gifted men—of industry—than at present. In the city of New York there <s tC veritable famine of well-grounded trial lawyers, especially for the trial of jury oasea. The flower of the bar has been drawn away by the temptations of money-making from the high profession of advocacy into becoming highly paid ■Jerks or aids to financiers to keep the latter prayerfully within the law. To those who are familiar with the high character and splendid attainments of the dozen or mote giant-s who practiced at the trial bar in the last generation, by comparison with the pigmies who now pass muster at our bar as
LOCAL TOURISTS ARE NOW SEEING AMERICA FIRST Steamship Agencies Report No Increase in Travel to Foreign Lands. Travel to foreign lands, report local steamship agencies, is keeping pace with last year. Slight reductions in tour expense seem to have had little effect on volume of business. The general feeling of tourists is tc see America first and then take in the wonders of the old country. * Indianapolis railroad ticket offices are doing more business than ever before, the result of extensive ad vertising and wakening of the public to the beauty of their home land, railroad agents say. The majority of travel s-ems to ho west to California and northwest to Oregon and the Mt. Rainier district. The recent opening of the great Northwest to tourists and the rush that followed have caused railroad companies to offer low rates, agents say. Many persons are expected to spend their vacations in seeing the wonders of western United States. Automobile travel, while extensive ■'vithin a radius of possibly 250 miles, has not greatly affected rail travel distances greater than this. The next tour section, now in ess of opening, is the Carlsbad casern district in New Mexico, it is said. The cavern, recently discovered. has already claimed a number sis tourists, who have braved the rigors of horseback travel to the now almost inaccessible region. MOTORISTS BEAT GASOLINE TRUST
Rt/ Timm &'prrint OMAHA. Neb.. May 30.—Motorists here are enjoying the benefits of a gas war between the city and a cooperative league on the one hand and the gasoline companies? on the other side. The price of gasoline has dropped from 2014 cents tq, 15 cents in four days. The Standard Oil and other com panies have reduced their price 314 cents to 17 cents a gallon for low test gasoline, to meet the price charged by the “muny" gas station. The price cut Is effective only in Omaha. Tn surrounding towns the old price of 2014 cents still remains. Governor Bryan has instructed the State's attorney general to invest! gate the fact that Omaha dealers are selling gasoline for 17 certts in Omaha, while the same compaies are charging 314 cents more in towns only four miles from the city. Bryan thinks this is a’ violation of the State anti-discrimination law. The starter oL- The gas war wa„s a jump of 4 Wins in ten days some three months ago, when city commissioners voted to install a municipal station and to sell gasoline for 17 cents. Plant Much Corn EDMONTON. Alberta. May 30. Nearly 100.000 acres will be planted in corn in southern this year, according to official estimates made by the provincial department of agriculture. Last year the acreage in com in the province was estimated At 53.000. A large area is Also being sown to sweet clover.
