COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES AT I. U. 11l FULL SWING Next Event Will Be Phi Beta Kappa Fraternity Dinner . June 3, By Times Special / BLOOMINGTON, Ind., May 29. The next event of Indiana University’s ninety-fifth commencement will be the Phi Beta Kappa dinner and address by Prof. Thomas F. Moran. June 3. The baccal&urate address will be given June 8, by the Rev. Allan B. Philputt, Indianapolis. On June 11, commencement exercises proper for the 1924 class of 614 members will he held. Dr. James A. Woodburn will give the commencement address? Commencement festivities began Wednesday with the annual law school dinner., senior convocation and annual reception of president and Mrs. Bryan to seniors and faculty. Law scholarship prizes were awarded Charles A. Halleek, Rensselaer, Ind., and John S. Hastings. Washington, Ind. Supreme Court judges attended the law lianquet. At senior convocation Dick Heller. Decatur, Ind., senior president, delivered the charge to the juniors, and Sam Xinnes, Ironwood, Mich., junior president,-accepted. Fraternity Elections Artnounced Dean C. M. Attorney Qeneral U. S. Lesh has rendered opinion to State Auditor Robert Bracken, holding the State must refund $5,817.08 to Sullivan County for taxes on coal land whigih were paid back to Sullivan County farmers following a Supreme Court decision last year. Coal was found under the lands assessed and coal companies leasing the land were taxed on the coal. Farmers, who leased their land, filed claims for refund of taxes which they said they had been assessed on the coal deposits. AFTER MANY MONTHS War Department Admits Own Agents Tried to Kidnap Bergdoll By United Press WASHINGTON’, May 29 —T h e War Department today officially disclosed that the two Americans who attempted to abduct Grover Cleveland Bergdoll, notorious draft dodger, in Eberbach. Germany, in the summer of 1921, were operatives of the Department of Criminal Investigation attached to the American Army in Germany. In requesting Congress to appropriate S2OO, for payment of damages to a German girl shot during the kidnaping, the War Department admitted the attempt. ‘PROMISES ARE LIES/DOERR SAYS South Side Civic League t Fights for Improvements, "We are going to get Improvements on the south side as they Jo on the north side, if we have to fight to the last ditch for them," declared Joseph L. Doerr, president of the Thirteenth Ward Civic League, at a meeting of his organization on Wednesday night at the South Side State Bank, 1125 S. Meridian St. Doerr said John L. Elliott, former city civil engineer, had spoken before the league at Its previous meeting and promised the playground at School 22, Meridian and Kansas Sts., would be improved. “We've been given all kinds of promises that were nothing but a pack of lies, and now we're going to see that something will be done,” said Doerr. A committee will be appointed to confer with the park board to get more equipment, shrubbery, benches, lights and other things for the playground. OFFICERS DENYUSEJ[ FORCE Say Henry Confessed to Murder of Jess Louden. By Times Special SHELBY VILLE, May 29.—Denial that force was used in obtaining a confession made by Charles E. Henry, colored, on trial for fatally .'hooting Jess Louden, Indianapolis policeman was made today by Detectives Thomas and Landers. They said Henry signed a confession admitting shooting Louden. George England, now serving a sentence in Indiana State Prison for grand larceny, testified *that Henry had admitted the shooting to him in a cel! in the Indianapolis jail. This was in continuation of a preliminary hearing by Judge H. C. Morrission to determine whether the alleged confession will be admitted as evidence. The jury was not presenj, Henry had claimed he was beaten and threatened by detectives.
CAREY SENTENCED AGAIN Given Six Months on State Farm on Auto Theft Charge. One more sentence Was tacked on court record of Willie Carey, 52, of 329 Kentucky Ave., today when Judge James A. Collins of Criminal Court sentenced him to six months on the Indiana State farm on an auto theft charge. Willie instructed his counsel, Fred McAllister, to arrange for appeal. Carey, who is arrested on an average of once a week, according to police records, has pending an appeal in Supreme Court from sentence of twelve months for petit larceny. GROTTO JUBILEE TONIGHT Six Acts Vaudeville, Drill Team Exhibition and Rand on Program. The “Speedfest Jubilee,” vaudeville extravaganza of the Sahara Grotto, will open tonight at 8 p. m. kv the Cadle Tabernacle. On the program are six acts of vaudeville, drill team exhibition, Grotto band and orchestra. The same program will be given Friday and Saturday evenings. Proceeds are to go to the fund for entertaining the international con vention of the Mystic Order of Veiled Prophets of the Enchanted Realm June 22-25. SHANK WARNS HEADS Mayor Shank today warned department heads to reduce expenses in the monthly cabinet meeting today.
