VAST MEMORIAL AT TERRE HAUTE peautiful Park and Boulevard to Honor Dresser, By WILLIAM FORTUNE On the west, bank o£- the Wabash River, near the bridge that carries the National Road across this historic stream, the people of Indiana will build a memorial to Paul Dresser, the man who 1 wrote Indiana’s famous State.song, "On the Banks of the Wabps*' ” The memorial, which will liVfc he form of an artistic acknowledgment of Paul Dresser's service to the people of Indiana; "yill stand "* the western gateway of the State, j greet the thousands of tourists*Agtio will pass that way entering or leaving Terre Haute. A large part of the plans were devised by George E. Kessler, tinfamous landscape engineer, before his death. These embrace a park system for a mile along the Wabash River and a boulevard of thirty-five miles completely encircling Tore Haute, to be knot,as the Paul Dresser Boulevard. The park and boulevard system to be provided by Terre Haute will cost approximately sf>.ooo,ooo. All of this will constitute the setting for the art memorial to be provided from funds contributed by the people of the State. The plans embrace, also, the preservation of the old home of Paul Dresser at Terre Haute. Expressive of State Spirit It is the hope of those who are interested in the movement that the memorial to be provided by contributions from people of the State may be made worthily expressive of the literary and musical spirit of Indiana as toe tribute of Indiana people to the author of their State song. While the plans are in course of development by an art committee composed of Carl H. Richer, chairman; J. Arthur Mac Lean, IBurns. Kurt Vonnegut of Indianapolis; Wood Posey, Herbert Briggs, War ren Miller and D. R. Shourds of Terre Haute, and Mrs. M. F. Johnston of Richmond, necessarily they must be adjusted to the funds that may be available and cannot be finally determined until it is known what amount will be contributed. SIOO,OOO Dosir-d It is hoped that the fund will amount to at least SIOO,OOO. The people of Torre Haute 'have already contributed $30,000 of this amount during the last month. There have been many generous contributions to the fund already, and there is substantial encouragement for the expectation that the people of Indiana will give a. tribute to the author of their State song that will compare favorably with what has been done in ojher States. The plans con-template-that at the proper time the

body of Paul Dresser will be brought back to his old home and his last resting place on the banks of the Wabash will be made by the people of Indiana a shrine suitably expressive of some of the sentiment of the song—that song which, as Max Ehrmann has said: “Is both a part of Indiana's -very soil and of the universal human heart wherever an American has made a fireside, and love abides.” State Park Conference Fourth jjational conference on State parks is being held this week at Gettysburg, Pa.
