DEMOCRATS FADE TRYING PROBLEM IN KU-KLUX ISSUE Opposition to Flat Declaration Against Klan Is Voiced. Framers of the Indiana Democratic State platform face a real question as to the Ku-Klux Klan issue when some opposition was voiced today against a specific antiKlan plank. even from some Catholic voters. Catholic leaders expressed fear that an extreme anti-Ivlan plank will precipitate bitter religious feeling and the better element among both Protestant and Catholics are desirous of avoiding such a state. Some Elements for Declaration On the other hand, certain elements among the 125,000 Catholic voters and many Protestants in the State are firm in support of a declaration against the Klan. .roseph Cravens, candidate for j Democratic nomination for Cover-, nor, declared he believed the “Klan ! issue would iron out all right and; that the religious question would not be an issue at the polls in the fall election.” Cravens takes the position that a specific anti-Klan plank would not | be good politics on the part of the j Democrats. Cravens' idea on Plank Cravens, however, believes the Democrats should have a plank which reiterates the .constitutional guarantee for religious freedom. The Illinois Democrats sidestepped the Klan issue. The plank adopted by Missouri Democrats is merely reiteration of the constitutional right. A plank presented to the Democrats for adoption by John Nolan, Evansville, and James E. Decry, Indianapolis, representatives of the National Council of Catholic Men. made specific denunciation of the Klan. Democratic State committee will meet Tuesday for selection of chief sergeant-at-arms and chief usher for the convention. June 4 and 5, and to complete other necessary arrangements.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SPEAKER STRESSES MAN’S STANDING Judge Greene, Louisville, Delivers Two Lectures on ‘The Religion of Joy/ Two lectures on Christian Science were delivered Saturday by Judge Samuel W. Greene, C. S , of Louisville, Ky., at the Second Church of Christ. Scientist, at Delaware and Twelfth Sts. The subject was “Christian Science; the Religion of Joy.” Judge Green said, in part: “One of the most satisfying results of one's spiritual understanding of God as taught in Christian Science is the equally important knowledge of what man is. “Man Is Spiritual” “In our generally accepted human concept of man, he has been regarded as material, therefore as temporal, and subject to sickness, s;n and death. In the spiritual interpretation of the Bible one learns that man is spiritual and partakes of the spiritual qualities of God, who is Spirit. This teaching, any Bible student will recognize as being based on the first chapter of Genesis where it is said: “And God said, Let us make man in our imago and likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and the fowl of the air/ and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in tiie image of God created he him; male and female created he them.’ (Genesis 1:26, 27). “The hostile critic of Christian Science may vehemently protest that one can not so construe the quoted passage of Genesis, while there remains the so-called material creation of man in the second chapter of Genesis. A complete answer to that one will find in the text book, in tiie Chapter called Genesis—which is a part of the ‘Key to the Scriptures.’ For the purposes of this lecture it can be briefly said that on the undisputed authority of Jesus, God in Spirit. To be logical and sensible in determining what man would resemble if made in God’s image it wo6ld seem necessary to say he must be like Spirit or spiritual and not material. This teaching is fortified by Paul's apparent effort in Ills writings to bring to man's understanding his spiritual nature, as is instanced in the following quotations. ‘For the things which are seen aie temporal, hut the things which are not seen are eternal.' 2 Cor. 4:18. ‘There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.’ (Rom. 8:1. 2). Creation Spiritual Idea So, Christian Science teaches that creation is not the moulding of forms out of matter, hut is the unfolding of spiritual ideas. To consider man as an idea of Mind may seem intangible to the material thinker as compared with flesh and hones. Immediately one turns, however, to tha realm of ideas, and con- j skiers their reality and permanence, such as eight times five are forty or the square on the hypotenuse of a right triangle equals the sum of : the squares on the other two sides, , he is better able to appreciate and j understand the forever truth that man is a spiritual idea. The text i book says. ‘A spiritual idea has not \ a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is olfensive.' (Science and Health 463:12. 13). This spiritual truth nnlerstood is the basis for healing in Christian Science.”

The rector is Dr. Percy Stickney Grant, of the church of the Ascension, and the woman Mrs. Rita De Costa Lydig.
