PASS PRESIDENCY AND FIGHT KLAN, RALSTON URGED New York World Says Senator’s Greatest Duty Is to Crush Indiana K, K, K, Timex Waxhint/ton Bureau, U 22 yew York Ave. WASHINGTON, D. C., May 17. A greater duty than aspiring to the presidency confronts Senator Ralston, according to the opinion of the New York World. The world wants him to fight the Ku-Klux Klan in Indiana to a standstill. “Ralston's nomination," says the AVorld, “is not demanded by the rank and file of the Democratic party. He is personally well liked. His record as Governor is regarded as excellent and his personal integrity is. we believe, unassailable. Nevertheless his nomination would represent nothing but manipulation of a few bosses behind the scenes in a deadlocked convention. It would be taken by the country with a good deal of justice, as an invitation to repeat the disaster which befell the Republican party at Chicago in 1920. For a man who was too amiable with his friends, the Democracy would seem to be offering the country a man who was too easily tired. “But although Senator Ralston is not qualified because of his age to lead his party or to administer the affairs of the country in these extraordinary times, he has, we believe. an extraordinary opportunity ahead of him. In his State the KuKlux Klan has captured the Republican machine and for the first time in a Northern State has appeared a real power. The leading Democratic candidates for Governor have accepted the challenge. Senator Ralston as an Indiana Democrat can accept it too. and by taking a bold stand against secret political societies based on bigotry he can without overtaxing his physical powers do a very high service to the country. Such a stand taken by a man who had renounced a chance to be nominated for President would round out his career in honor and glory.”

Edward Payson Weston, world famous walker, was shot and beaten at his farm near Kingston, N. Y., by a band of unknown men.
