PARDON RULING TO BE TAKEN TO SUPRK COURT Attorney General Stone Upholds President’s Clemency Privilege. By Lnited Press WASHINGTON, May 16.—Attorney General Stone will carry to the United States Supreme Court the ruling by Federal Judges Carpenter and Wilkerson at Chicago refusing to recognize a pardon granted Philip Grossman by President Coolidge, it was said at the Justice Department today. The department holds that the contempt of court charge -on which Grossman was sentenced was an offense against the United States and not mere contempt of court’s order requiring Grossman to close his saloon. For this reason, the department takes the position that the President had a full right to extend to the prisoner if he desired to. Jeff Davis on Another Tour Wearing a ten-gallon cow puncher hat and a twenty-two-ounce “gold" stick pin, Jeff Davis, “King of the Hoboes,” called at American Legion national headquarters today. Davis is on his way to the Kentucky Derby. Then he will continue on his sixth trip around the world, he said.

A Puzzle a Day

LENGTH OF \ ' STICK 1 A farmer decided to dig- a circular well. He laid down a stick which he used as a radius and made the circle around it with a string.- He then decided that while the extreme width of the well was satisfactory, it would be better to make it hexagonal (six-sided) in shape. How did he do it? Yesterday’s answer: The 75-pound lead weight was put none basket, and let fall to the ground. Then the boy descended, using the weight as a counterbalance; 90 pounds vs. 75. The weight was removed at the top, and the woman descended, the boy acting as counter-balance: 105 pounds vs. 90. The weight was sent down alone; the woman and the weight acted as the counter-balance for the man; 105 plus 75. vs. 196. The woman stayed on the w T all and the weight came down alone. Then the boy -nt down, as the wegiht came up: W vs. 75. The woman took out the weight, and came down, the boy going up as counter-balance. 105 vs. 90. The boy sent down the weight by itself, and then used it as counterbalance for himself: 90 vs. 75. In no case did the greater weight exceed the lesser by more than 15 pounds.
