C., with Herbert Hoover. Secretary of Commerce, it Is doubtful whether the general public has grasped the importance of these conferences. Eldon Dynes, president of the Dynes-Pohlman Lumber Company, E. Twenty-Eighth S . and the Monon Railroad, calls attention tS the decision of the manufacturers of lumber, whereby each piece will be .narked by the. grade. "A recently invented device,” said Dynes, "has proved successful In marking grades by means of steel dies and indelible ink. Unfortunately, it has been the practice of unscrupulous lumber dealers to substitute a lower grade of lumber for a higher one.” All Dumber Labeled The Dynes-Pohlman Lumber Company has followed the practice of labeling every pile of lumber in its yards and sheds. A large sign is suspended over every pile of lumber, booring, ‘iding, etc., and on this is printed the size of the stock and the grade. The company makes it a special point in selling to a customer to invite the purchaser to look at the lumber he is buying before it leaves the yard. Lumber Dealers Benefited “By the new method of marking grades,” continued Dynes, “the consumer gradually will become acquainted with the various grades and their markings, and he will know' when he is receiving the grades he is paying for. The reputable lumber dealer v ili be benefited as well as the customer, for the reason that the dealer who delivers the grade which he contracts to sell will not have to bid against the low price made by the dealer who would substitute a lower grade of lumber from the one specified."

NEW SERVICE BY HOBBS NURSERIES • Plant Shrubbery Sept, 1, Is Advised, “Folks who are going away for the summer should not fail to make arrangement for some oue to care for their flowers, shrubs and plants during their absence," said Harry Hobbs, of the firm of C. M. Hobbs & Sons, Bridgeport Nurseries. “It Is easy to neglect an important item In this regard, and if home owners will heed a timely warning on the subject they wdll save themselves from certain loss that is bound to come while the dry season of summer is here.” In giving this advice to home owners, Hobbs is rendering them a service that takes away his own profits, because whenever *a home owmer suffers any plant loss, he must re place dead plants with live ones, and Mr. Hobbs is in the business of selling live plants. But this sort of service it not unusual for the Hobbs firm to render. Right now the Hobbs company is advising its patrons not to plant hardy flowers or shrubbery. The
