COOLIDGE QUOTED CORRECTLY, SMS FORD JOURNALIST Tells Senate His Denial of Shoals Promise Is ‘Crass Politics.' By United Press WASHINGTON, May 7.—James Martin Miller, former employe of the Dearborn Independent, who quoted President Coolidge as saying he was trying to deliver Muscle Shoals to Henry Ford, told the Senate Agriculture Committee today that he had “correctly stated the President’s words.” “I had a conference with the President on Oct. 12, 1923. at 10:30 a. m.. and twenty-five minutes later I sent thu tqlegram to E. G. Liebold, Ford's secretary,” Miller said. Can’t Deny It “The President himself brought up the Muscle Shoals question at our conference,” Miller said. “And he cannot deny it. The denial he issued was a crass political dissimulation.” In a session lasting far into the night, debate on the Shoals question grew very bitter. Senator Norris, Nebraska, led the attack on the Shoals question, declaring that Mr. Coolidge, Senators Harrison, Mississippi: Heflin, Alabama, and Henry Ford had become partners to get congressional sanction for Ford’s enterprise. Scrambled Eggs “Coolidge, Ford, Heflin, and Harrison—Cal, Hank, Tom and Pat —all mixed up together like scrambled eggs. Result, fertilizer,” said Norris. Norris described the conference between Ford and the President, and pointed out that Ford became a fast friend and supporter of Mr. Coolidge thereafter.
