WOMEN FINANCE BIENNIAL California Federation Refuses Outside Aid for Convention. California club women are to teach men something about holding conventions. They are financing their big biennial, which will meet in Los Angeles, June 3-13, without outside aid. The California Federation, which will en'ertain the biennial convention of the General Federation of omen’s Clubs, has worked out? a plan that is operating successfully. Every club member is contributing 60 cents, and thus the 70,000 women of the State organization will he joint hostesses. Dyed Lace Dyed lace is used extensively on lingerie this season. Nile green and apricot are two very popular shades. The advantage of dyed lace is obvious since in order to keep colored ■ilk garments fresh looking it is necessary to re-dip them occasionally, and the lace is bound to become colored, so it might as well start out that way. Broad Brims The broad-brimmed hat is being launched for midsummer, and while it is a little strange looking after the close hats that have become habitual with most of us. it Is most charming. A flower or so strewn carelessly o\)er the brim or a bow of ribbon are popular trimmings. Linen Vestees The vestees, collars and cuffs that are attracting the'most favorable attention these days are of very fine handkerchief linen, hand hemstitched and trimmed with hand run tucks of tiny lace edges. Straight Hair It is noticeable that straight hair is becoming more and more the smart thing to display. The Dutch cut with bangs about the front and a straight cut at the sides and hack is a great favorite with the younger set. Coat Dresses Bengaline and alpaca are both used for most practical and stunning coat dresses. They have sufficient weight to hang in the approved straight line, and they are also sufficiently soft in texture to please the woman who does not care for masculine effects. Buttons The row of buttons right down the front of the frock may he of glass, carved wood, pearl, or self material, but they are in evidence on the majority of afternoon* costumes. Handbags Handbags of bright red, green or purple leather come in envelope shapes with handles and are leather lined and completely equipped with aids to beauty. Nightgowns Matching combination suits and nightgowns come in cross-barred voile or very fine batiste and are bound j with color. Contrasts x With the dark silk frock the chic woman Is very apt to wear a hat and scarf iof vivid checks or plaids or ! printed silk. I Slender Giri A most attractive frock for a slender girl is of blue faille silk with lar4f overchecks in red and black. It i&s a wide sash tied with a puffy bow at one side.
Cupid Holds Secret of How Love May Be Won
“1 am in love with a fellow who does not love me. Can you tell me how to <rain his love?” Perhaps, were l an oracle, 1 could. 1 would search the man’s mind until 1 found what it was he wanted in the woman he would love, and v/hat it was the girl who asked the question lacked.
It is not enough to deal in generalities when telling how to win love. What calls forth the greatest admiration and love in one man inspires only dislike in another. Nor is it enough to watch a man, to see what kind of girls it is whose company he seeks, Love has little respect for a mans’ old habits or desires. It sends him along strange paths, gives him new likes and dislikes. Love may cojne gradually, without any surprises. Or it may upset a man’s whole life, awakening in him anew character. It is impossible to forsee how it will come. Even so, it is impossible to tell how to inspire it. That is a secret Cupid alone holds. Who Can" Tell? Dear Martha Lee: I am in love with a fellow who does not love me. Can you tell me how to gain his love? I have had dates with other fellows, but can not care for any of them ass do for him. GOLDEN HAIR. Could I answer your question I should have the world at my feet. Love is like lightning—you never know where it is going to strike. Sometimes a girl may deliberately set out to ensnare a man’s heart, and <io it. But she must do it through her own cunning, with a heart made wise by its own love. Another cannot tell her how. There can be no genera lrules for inspiring love. Oh, yes, there are plenty for making oneself attractive to a man—perhaps it would be better ' to say, to men. But love? It is too elusive, too uncertain.* So you must work out your own problem. Would Be Taller Dear Miss Lee: 1. I am IK years old. weight ninety-seven pounds and 4 feet 11 inches tail. Js there anything I could do to grow? How much underweight am 1? 2. I have a medium complexion, medium brown hair and gray eyes. Could you tell me the summer colors in which I would look best? 3. Could you suggest some way for me to make my dresses so f would look taller? 4. Is there any harm in using a little rouge, as long as you do not go to ex . tremes? Alter a while, does it take the j natural color from the cheeks? VENUS. 1. At 18, you still have a chance tot grow a bit, so don’t worry about that, j Healthful living, with plenty of exercise, the right kind of food, and plenty of sleep, will help. Standard tables give the correct weight for a girl of your age and height as 110 pounds. Those tables, of course, do not take into account the fact that slimness is fashionable just now. 2. If your complexion is not sallq*v, you should be able to wear almost any of the soft shades that are so popular now. especially poudre bleu and moss green. Be careful of browns, yellow and orange; they may rob your hair of luster, unless they are just the right shades. Orchid probably is becoming. Gray and black and dull i colors probably would make you look ! drab, since you are of a "neutral” j complexion. 3. Wear straight-line dresses. Pan | els and side pieces hanging below the skirt add height. As you are thin, you 1 probably wear well dresses with tight j bodices and full skirts. Up-and-down stripes also make one i look taller. 4. Peaches and cream complexions ! don’t grow In smoky cities. So we j have to make our own. at times. But. | if you have any natural color, you could not improve it with rouge. And, il you do use rouge at all, use it very, very sparingly or you will only spcil, instead of aiding, your complexion. Puzzled Sheik Dear Mow Lee: I am a young man 22 years old. I have a good job and make lots of money-, and have a nice car and go out with lots of girls. I am in love with one girl But she will not allow me to call on her more than two nights a week. Do you think 1 am doing w-rong to go out with other girls? SOUTH SIDE SHEIK. If you enjoy the company of other girls, there’s no reason why you should not have it. ALWAYS BE CAREFUL: Do you love your wife? If you do. you may be able to help her. The fact that you waited for her while she was in prison might mean her reforma tion. „ However, that seems to be a slim hope, after her career. You coqld. of course, obtain a divorce without any trouble. Jean Shows Her Claws Dear Martha Lee L have been going with a fellow for four months. I have learned to like him very much. He never has kissed me: this makes me like him more. He never has dates with other girls, hut talks to them all the time. He does this just to make me jealous. I know. Ho once said h* cared for me. If he really did, do you think he would do things like that? Should I worry about these other girls? I know I shouldn't, but I do. Do you think he cares? JEALOUS JEAN. I can not tell whether or not he cares. Jean. But. if he does, I feel sorry for him. unless yon overcome this foolish jealousy. As you realize it is foolish, you can overcome it by exerting will power, and using common sense. LOCAL GIRL TO PRESIDE t— Y. \V. C. A. World Commit to Meeting ing to Follow National Convention. Yes, I met him and took him to the office. Sally Atherton also got home. We met her at the sidewalk as she was getting out of her taxi. I want to see you a moment, Leslie, before I go to New York, but perhaps I would better not come over. It will be John's first evening home.
