PASSAGE OF TIME THINS OUT HANKS OF‘BOYS IN BLUE’ G. A, R, Membership Diminishing—Extinction Is Seen by 1930. The ranks of the Grand Army of the Republic in Indiana are fast diminishing. By 1930 the membership will be extinct, according to figures compiled by Gil R. Stormont, assistant adjutant general. The army once claimed 23,173 members. That was in 1890. The total number of posts was 529—some towns and cities had several. At that time Stormont was the State commander. Ten years ago, the Indiana department had 10,626 veterans. Today it has 4,124. History Changes Things For years it was the Grand Army that looked after arrangements for speakers and programs on Memorial day. Since 1919 history has charged. Veterans of later wars now takecharge.
