SHARP BREAKS IN STOCKS FEAT® WEEK’S BUSINESS No Depression in Sight, However, Says Prof. Lewis Haney. By DR. LEWIS IL HAXET Director of the Bureau of Business Research, New York University. NEW YORK. March 31.—One of the outstanding developments of the past week has been the sharp drop in the price of certain securities on the New Tork Stock Exchange. These securities were chiefly thi high-priced industrials, that is the .-.locks of certain manufacturing concerns which have been selling at figures far greater than present dividends warrant. They have represented an element of speculative inflation which has been a danger both in stocks and in commodities such as wheat and cotton. Severe Losses Noted American Can Company stock at 103 was down 1S points from the j year’s high level. Corn Products re-; fining company common stock at 169 had fallen 18 points. The same may t?e said of National Lead, United S ates Steel comrno nhas fallen 10 points in a month. Baldwin Locomotive and General Electric also showed big drops. These stocks have been paying only from 6 to 9 per cent on par. counting extra dividends, but have been selling at prices ranging from 109 to 230 : They have been selling on the basis of ' things hoped for. Their decline shows that the bubbles of hope have been punctured. Commodities Drop Since last November raw cotton has fallen from over 37 cents a pound to

L y J HAT EVER else you do, don’t jYV | t> e guilty of drowning your garden. Many beginners make the mistake of watering their crops too much. This practice is probably founded on the fallacy that the more moisture plants are given the better they will grow. Too much water Is worse than too little. Rather than sprinkle constantly during seasons of drought, try shallow cultivation with a steel rake around the plants Instead. This is what horticulturists call but little over 26 cents, and the trade is waiting for the bottom. Wheat and flour show a similar situation. Within a few weeks cash wheat has fallen eight cents a bushel and the May wheat future is back nearly to the $1 a bushel level. Other Instances might be given. The point is that we must now admit that hopes of an early spring rise were too high, and values were marked up too much. The advance in commodity prices which began last August has not carried through. While It Is well to recognize this change In the aspect of things, we must not swing too far In the direction of pessmism. Most emphatically no crisis or severe depression is In sight. This may be stated confidently and for several reasons. (1) There Is no credit strain and money is far from tight. (2) Purchasing power is high and retail sales are large and growing. As long as these conditions prevail nothing worse than a moderate correction or readjustment in the rate of production and in speculative values. Is to be expected.

Summer watering should be done in the evening that the moisture may not be evaporated by the sun. It is only necessary to moisten the soil. Don't soak it. dry is no sign that the plants aren’t getting plenty of moisture from beneath. Open Fui-rows Perhaps the best manner of applying water to crops Is to open slight furrows alongside the rows of plants and allow water to gently flow through these miniature ditches. Frequent light sprinkling Is dangerous. It is best to thoroughly soak the garden about once every week, providing there has been no rain in the meanwhile. Seeds planted during a period of drought should be sown in slight furrows which have previously been filled with water. Permit the water to settle and soak into the soil. Then put your seeds In and cover the trench with dry earth. It is a good practice to visit your garden during the early morning, while the dew Is still present on the plants. Such inspection will reveal what has happened during the night and prepare you to combat any insect invasion. Don’t attempt a garden of such size that its care will become a burden. A small plot Intensely cultivated is far better than one half cared for. Stir With Rake Plants will be stimulated into growth much faster If the surfac-s soil frequently Is stirred with a rake. Stirring not only eliminates weeds, but likewise admits air—a

NEW COMBINATION LETTERHEAD FINDS INCREASED FAVOR Direct-by-Mall Printing Being Introduced by Local Concern, A letterhead and a direct by mall advertising piece, all In one. Is a re cent development of the printing husl ness. The double value mailing piece is called the Dual-Use letterhead, the product of the Dual-Use Company of Knoxville, Tenn. The first Indianapolis printer licensed by tbs company to print this patented style of combined letterhead and advertising message was the Whitaker Press, 605 Print Craft Bldg., 225 N. New Jersey St. System Is Popular According to Edwin S Whitaker, sec rotary-treasurer of the Whitaker Press, the Dual-Use letterhead has found favor In the eyes of many Indianapolis firms that have discovered the advantages offered by this one piece combined advertisement and personal letter. Tho Dual-Use letterhead Is made with a fojded flap at one corner that does not become detached from the original letter unless it Is desired to have it detachable. In which case the fold Is perforated so the flap can be torn off When folded the whole piece Is of standard letterhead size. In this form it can be placed In a letter file, and kept with the original letter. Thus what would ordinarily be a loose enclosure, goes to the recipient of the letter attached to the letter In such manner that It Is Impossible to misplace it In the nie. Valuable System This Is particularly valuable In at tachlng price lists or any information to a letter, the receiver of which would desire to keep the Information carried on the attached enclosure. The Dual-Use letterhead can be utilized for almost any kind of dlrect-by-mall advertising message. If It Is of light paper stock a booklet can be stitched Into the folded part of the letter and become a permanent part of that letter.

the growing of the same vegetable throughout a long season. Lettuce, for example, may be sown very early. But if you sow all your seed at once, all your lettuce will mature at about the same time and you won’t be able to eat It all. To prevent such waste, mark off the space you intend allotting the various crops, and sow hut a small portion of the seed at once. Follow the first sowing a week or so later with another one. In this way you will get a succession of crops continuing to the close of the gardening season. This plan applies especially to radishes, onion (sets, not seed), peas, beans, kohlrabi, spinach and sweet corn. NEXT: GARDEN FLOWERS.
