Duse Has Saddest Eyes of Any Woman on Earth

By WALTER D. HICKMAN A hush fell over the Lincoln Hotel. A big limousine stopped at the Kentucky Avenue entrance of the hotel. Lady Catherine Onslow stepped from the big car. Then there was

a movement on the part of a little old whitehaired woman, dressed entirely in black. Men removed their hats as this little faded bundle of black stepped slowly tfbm. the big car. Signora EJeanora Duse had arrived in Indianapolis. She moved toward House Detective A. Beck. I was standing at his side. She looked appealing-

!y sad at the big doors. Beck told me to hold one of the doors as he held the other. The famous tragedienne Tvalked close to me as she entered the hotel. Her dark coat brushed my overcoat. In that brief second I probably got closer to Ouse than any other newspaper man in this country, as she never gives interviews. Care was taken by the hotel management to give Duse the seclusion she desired. She walked to the elevator, where a lift was waiting. She was followed by Lady Onslow, who is her constant companion. Maids, secretaries and other members of her private party followed her to her suite of six rooms on the twelfth floor. When the door closed on her. Eleonora Duse was again shut off from the world. We all recall her romance with Gabriele d’ Annunzio, and when that romance was shattered Duse went into retirement, only to appear before the world again when the late war exhausted her savings. When I saw her pinched face, a lock of her white hair and those eyes —sad, but still flaming throughout air these years—l knew that I was looking into the Very soul of Duse.
