AUDITOR EXPLAINS STATE DEBT MAY f REAM,I,I Bracken Says Relief Can Come Only From County Treasurers, The State debt will exceed $6,500,000 by June 30 unless relief is obtained by advance payments from county treasurers in May, State Auditor Robert W. Bracken said today in a formal statement answering a report of the State board of accounts that he is partly responsible for a present State deficit of $4,440,000. The statement follows. •The publicity which has been given to the report of examination of the State auditor's office attempts to fasten upon the auditor considerable blame for the indebtedness against the general fund. the State debt will, by end of June, exceed $6,500,000 unless relief is obtained in May by an advance from the county treasurers. “In the matter of supporting the various State institutions, the Governor has made repeated attempts to compel the auditor to merge the accounts of the penal institutions and the benevolent fund, which he has refused to do. “In that manner, the costs of maintaining the penal institutions and the construction of maintaining the penal institutions could be charged to the fund that is raised for support of the State's unfortunates.”
