Patterson, official of the company, announced tqday that fatterson shades will be used as equipment for the new store of the Century Furniture Company, at Georgia and S. Meridian Sts. NEW BUILDING IN 1924 IS EXPECTED TO MM RECORD Gains Have Been Scored in Each of the Past Five Years, A year of new building activities that Is likely to create another new record in this line is In prospect for Indianapolis, according to the view of the business men of the city who are closest to * the subject and who are convinced that even last year’s record of $27,144,434 of new buildings started within twelve months has excellent chances of being exceeded. Each year for the last five years. Indianapolis has established new high marks in new building accomplishment. The figures, compiled from the permits issued by the city building department, show the following startling progress in building activities: 1919 _ ........... $12,794,556 1920 $15,284,119 1921 ............... $18,328,965 1922 ............. $26,038,579 1923 .......... $27,144,484 Some Plans Unannounced For the year 1924, it is conservatively estimated by business men interested in building operations that the total new building project* begun will be in excess of $27,500,000, and to this total may be added considerably more If several big projects In the downtown district that have not been definitely announced are advanced to the stage of starting operation* within 1924. There has been a particularly noticeable Increase in the building of homes in Indianapolis in the lost few years. The population of the city has been increasing with regularity at the rate of about 1,000 new inhabitants a month since the last Government census in 1920. At that time Indianapolis was credited with a population of 314,194 persons. On July 1, 1922, the Government estimated, the population had increased to a total of 342,718 persons. This has made necessary the erection of hundreds of new homes. Building Each Hour It was shown by the city building department’s records, scanned recently to determine how much home building had been going on, that 2,900 frame dwellings had been erected during the year 1923 —-more than one for each working hour of the year. In the last three years it is estimated that 8,000 new dwelling houses of all type, exclusive of apartment houses, had been built in Indianapolis. With this record to look back upon, and with the need for new homes eonincreasing, on account of the steady Increase in population and the . iuxsition of new industries by the city, it Is safe to predict a continuation of an Intensive home building campaign during this year.
