COUNTY TAX NEAR 1919 FIGURES AND BELOW 1921-1922 Officials Question Whether Rate Is High Enough to Cover Demands, Sole—This is one of a series of articles on taxes and the tax problem. By FELIX F. BRUNER While direct property taxes of the State and city have increased enormously during the last six years, county taxes are almost down to the 1919 level and considerably lower than in 1921 and 1922. There Is a question, however, in the minds of some officials whether the rate is high enough now to take care of demands. Almost as much is contributed by Indianapolis property owners to the upkeep of the county as is contributed by the same property owners to the upkeep of the State. In some years the figure has been higher. This year, on the basis of rate and property valuation, Indianapolis will pay 51.659.559.90 to the county. This compares with $1,419,152 3. In 1319: SI. 442.507.69 in 1920; $2,282,120.43 In 1921; $2,030,277.71 in 1922. and $1,896,153.11 in 1923. • Five County Funds County taxes are divided into five funds: general, gravel road repair, gravel road bond, sinking and tuberculosis. The general fund is the largest, but at this time is smaller than at any time during the last six years. This year Indianapolis will contribute $587,053.39 t,o the general 6 to 8 P. M. GET READY FIRST Some “get the cart before the horse." That procedure is a failure. | Definite, specific, practical training must come first. Tou can't afford to \ “fiddle around" at this or that, hoping you will accidentally “settle into” I a satisfactory place. Let nothing of this kind tempt you. We know per* I sonally of all too many such instances. Business firms want young peo- I pie who are ready. They want those who can step right in and go to I work. Remember, you’re going to pay for this training whether you get I it or not. If you don't get it, you'll pay for it in lost opportunities. By f all means, get it and enjoy its many advantages.
