It Is A1 Jolson They Buy and It Is Jolson They Get
By WALTER D. HICKMAN HERE is one name on the stage I that the American people buy. 1 * I Am speaking of A1 Jolson. The public doesn't care a hang what show Jolson is in just as long as he is present. “Bombo" is the name of the show, but it is Jolson they buy and It is Jolson they get. Have never been a.sked wheji is “Bombo” coming to town, but the question is. when will Jolson come? Jolson is a name buy and bis “repeat'’ tour in “Bombo" proves the case. I am informed on good authority that Jolson played to higher gross last night on his second trip to the Murat in this show than he did on the opening night of the first visit of “Bombo" here last year. “Bombo" is more Jolson than ever. You get Jolson even before the curtain goes up. He w.as in the boxoffice last night selling tickets, joking and talking with the customers. He stayed in the boxoffice actually selling tickets until it was time for him to make up. Jolson gets a lot of fun out of his business. He admits he has to get laughs out of his work or he can't work. He knows how to become a part of his audience. “Bombo” is now en route to the coast and that has been taken into consideration. With the show on that basis, Jolson is doing much more work than he did here a year ago. Just a Study of Why Jolson is the Biggest Draw on the Stage Jolson makes more money out of is stage work than any other player or. the stage today. He Is not afraid of work and he knows the science of delivering his material. I heard a man remark as he left the theater last night: “I feel like I know Jolson personally." And that is true. He knows how to “connect" with every one in his audience. Last night after he had sung number after number and the show was over, Jolson remained on the stage. He sang more numbers after the audience had yelled for 'April Showers.” “Sing ‘April Showers,* ” they cried "Why not?” he answered, and then rehearsed the orchestra and caused a sensation with that old number. He pleases you and the rest of us. The show doesn’*' matter. Jolson is th<' whole works. That’s what the audience wants and Jolosn is wise enougu .o give himself lo the audience. He boosts his phonograph records and does it with so much class that you feel it is your duty to hurry right over to a Brunswick shop and buy ■'California, Here I Come" and "I'm Going South.” Jolson is the only one in the world that can make me respect this seif-advertising. It is the way he does it that counts. He even praised “Painted People” at the Circle this week. His show numbers include "Morning Will Come." “Arcady." which regisred with a bang last night; "On the Bil Back Porch" and others. From a Jol'on standpoint, the show is better than last year because he ha? more to do. The curtain did not eo down last night until 11:20 o'clock. I will mention only two other mem<*v- in the cast —Acline Gardiner and Frank Bernard, both excellent dancer* B man! does a number of wonderful dances. I think 1 have his name correct. I hope so because his wsrk is splendid. JR is Jolson you want to see and hear. ’Jolson still the best individual buy on the American stage. At the Murat tonight, Saturday matinee and night. SWANSON’S LATEST MOVIE ON VIEW AT THE PALACE Interest on the week-end hill at the Palace is centered upon the Gloria Swanson movie, “The Humming Bird." This picture has considered strong enough to he held over for a second week. It is a Paramount picture. The vaudeville part of a lengthy blB is devoted mostly to comedy. There are two acts which will get the interest and the largest share of the applause. Am speaking of Harry Angler and Nett a Packer in “The Old Fool.” Arteler is cast as an aged stage door Johnnie who marries a chorus girl. I The act is in three scenes. The second scene i= a clever “train" scene. .Veil handled. The last, scene Is plain hokum, but it gets laughs and even -'reams from the audience. The

variety audience of today wants to laugh. Why not. The other act in the winning class is Joe Bennett, who is announced as appearing in a “dramatic sensation." He starts out with using the final set of Harry Angler. He then goes into a single blackface act. He knows howto dance. He is a wise showman and knows just how much to give an audience. He leaves the audience begging for more. The Follis Girls dance better than they sing. Sawyer and Eddy open the bill in an aerial novelty. WARNING IS ISSUED TO PREVENT COLDS Dr, W, F, King of State Health Board Points to Tuberculosis Danger.
“Every cold is a potential case of tuberculosis.” With “Swat the cold" as a suggested slogan, Dr. W. F. King, secretary State board of health, warned today that the public should take every precaution against taking colds and urged proper steps in getting rid of them. The season for colds and influenza is here, it was pointed out. Pneumonia danger is also great although it is not extended to as great a proportion of people as the ordinary cold. “It is as important, it seems to me.

that a person with a cold should protect other as for a tuberculosis victim to do so," said Dr. King. “Eighty per cent of the latter disease comes from an infection during childhood. The so-called ‘sniffles’ of children is the common start. “A cold is nothing to be sneezed at. It is a serious infection and may develop into tuberculosis. “You plight as well make a danger zone of five feet in circumference around every person infected with a cold. visit Indiana this year, in Dr. King’s opinion. The customary time for the plague, “discovered” during the war, is in January and February, although it is now poscible for the disease to break out any time and any place in individual cases.
