KU-KLUX EMPEROR URGES NATIONAL AID FOR SCHOOLS Dr, Evans Declares Present Educational System ‘lnadequate,’ When Dr. Hiram W. Evans fame to Indianapolis Tuesday he was imperial wizard of the Invisible Empire, Knights of the Ku-Klux Klan. Today he is emperor. Announcement of his election was made by Percy James, leader of the Cadle Tabernacle choir, who introduced Dr. Evans at a meeting on Wednesday night at the tabernacle. Establishment of a Government department of education, with a school man in the President’s Cabinet, was advocated by Dr. Evans. It was estimated that 4,000 per sons were unable to gain admittance to the tabernacle. “We are supporting a program that will establish a department of education and give national aid to our public schools,” said Dr. Evans. "Schools- Inadequate" “Our politicians seek not the common welfare, but their own success. Our schools are in every way inadequate. BREAD TRUST’ IS UNDER FIRE AS WKHOMES’ Legislative Action Demanded to Lower Price of Loaves by Progressives, By United Press WASHINGTON, Feb. 14. A colossal bread “trust” is robbing American homes of $1,000,000 a day, Basil Manley, head of the Peoples Legislative service, declared today in a report to Senator La Follette and other progressive leaders, demanding congressional action against the “combine,” Bread should be selling at 6 cents for a pound, loaf, instead of for 9 cents, Manley said, basing his statement on the present price of wheat. Manley’s report is based on an investigation as to why bread prices remained at war level while wheat •vent below pre-war price. Bread made from American flour is today being sold In England at 4 cents a pound, Manley reported. He charged millers, bakers and. retailers are making enormous profits on Hour and bread. Manley cited the General Baking Company which he declared in 1922 made 110 per cent on each share of stock. Bread prices in American cities were declared by Manley to be “arbitrary and artificial” and violating all economic laws. Mrs. Mary Banks, colored, 511 Spring St., regretted today her aim with a stove poker was poor. A man saying he was a meter reader knocked. Mrs. Banks went to the front door; he was at the back. She went to the back; he was at the front. Finally he pushed right in. Mrs. Banks seized her poker and chased him to Michigan St., where she let the weapon fly. The meter reader picked It up and hurled tt back. He too. missed. All this according to officers who escorted Mrs. Banks safely home.
7fl(I) TO PROFIT By CUT IN RATES Light Company Reduction Saves $350,000, Affecting a saving of approximately $350,000 to more than 7,000 patrons, a reduction In electric power rates of the Indianapolis Light and Heat Company and Merchants Heat find Light Company has been ordered by the public service commission. The Indianapolis cut is in pursuance of a general policy of the commission inaugurated last summer In lowering electric power rates of utilities throughout the State. A conference was held by commission members at 3 p. m. Wednesday. The schedule, prepared by Harry Boggs, chief accountant of the commission, assisted by O. C. Herdrich, public accountant, was submitted and approved. A previous rate order was made in April, 1923. An Important Item in the new schedule is a provision for discount of 5 per cent on bills for cash if presented within ten days. RIOTS CONTINUE IN RHINE ZONE
One Killed When Communists Attack Police.. \ By l tilled Press COLOGNE, Feb. 14. —One man was killed and eight wounded when communists attacked safety police at Stettin during the night. The police were surrounded in a bank and several were wounded while a number of the attackers fell. At Hamburg 800 communists tried to demopstrate, but were dispersed. Meanwhile, separatists were slipping Tbaway from palatinate towns, fearing the fate suffered by Schwab, separatist commissar, and his followers at Plsrmasens, where many were hacked and burned Jo death. Two hundred Elks were “fathers” to 200 high school boys at a banquet given Wednesday night at the Elks Home. The Rev. A. H. Moore made an address on Lincoln. The Rev. W. J. Malcolm, ,Beaver Dam, Wls., who organized the boys into a club known as the Ironsides, presented them with a large copper shield bearing the inscription, “Fight for Right.” Judge E. E. Cloe presided. ST. PATRICK SPEAKERS Committee Advances Arrangements for Meeting and Parade. Elaborate plans for celebrating StPatrick’s day are being made by the St. Patrick's day committee, according to E. J. Sexton, secretary. Speakers at Tomlinson Hall chosen include Mayor-Shank, James E. Deery, and the Rev. Pierce Dixon of Terre Haute. Governor McCray has indicated he will take part in the celebration. Sexton said. Anthony F. Sweeney will be grand marshal of the parade. Staff officers and aides will be named later. ARMED BANDITS GET SIOO Indianapolis Poire Match for Gunmen After Danville Robbery. Three heavily armed bandits held up the Terre Haute & Eastern Traction Company station agent at Danville, Ind., today, and rifled the cash box of SIOO. The men left in a coupe headed toward Indianapolis. Sheriff Charles Clark followed. At Mt. Jackson he called Indianapolis police and told therp he had failed to get sight of the men or car.
