Griffis Is Tendered Welcome of Hero Attempted Kidnaper of Bergdoll Arrives Home and Is Met With Great Ovation in New York.

By United Press NEW YORK, Feb. 11.—Corliss Hooven Griffis, who w r on fame through attempting to kidnap Grover Cleveland Bergdoll, millionaire slacker, now a fugitive in Germany, returned home today aboard the liner Albert Ballin. He was given a hero's welcome which Is to be added to with a ban quet Wednesday night in Chicago and climaxed with a great homecoming celebration in Hamilton. Ohio, Thurs day. An official committee named by the mayor of New York met thg Albert Balin. But neither this welcome nor the ceremonies at the city hall later in which acting Mayor Murray Hulbert made the principal address, moas- \ ured in importance to young Griffis I the welcome he received from his j father. Dr. E. S. Griffis; his mother and his beautiful sister, Dorothy, who 1 regards him as a hero, and who { worked tirelessly in the effort to have j him released from a German prison Griffis was convicted of attempting to kidnap Bergdoll and sentenced to twenty-one months in a Baden jail. His release was effected a few weeks later. Because of a misunderstanding in arrangements it was not untU after Griffis had landed he met his family, who had gone down the bay to meet him. Trial Postponed In telling of his experiences in Germany he declared the Germans post-* poned his trial in order to keep him locked up as long as they could, knowing that soon after he was sentenced he would be released on demand of the American Government. "I was never sent to the penitentiary." he said, "but kept in the Mosbetch jail. The food was bad. The SSOO I had with me when I was arrested was not returned to me. When I was freed —and I was ordered deported. not pardoned—they put me on the boat without a penny and the only clothes 1 had were those given me by friends. “While in jail I was most of the time in virtual solitary confinement." Ind., Feb. 11.—Catching his foot in a rope as he jumped from a blazing platform on a telephone pole, Timothy J. O’Brien, 60, of this city, lineman for the Indiana Bell Telephone Company, whs held suspended in the air while his clothes burned from him. When the rope burned in two he fell to the ground.
