MALLON United Press Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON, Feb. 4—Federal Trade Commission experts have been turned loose on books of Washington brokers, hunting for huge profits believed made by Government officials through trading in oil stock just before the Teapot Dome lease became public. Members of the Senate Committee investigating Teapot Dome called in the trade commission’s expert to go through brokers records when the brokers objected to submitting their books to the committee on the ground they were too voluminous to be taken to the Capitol. Chairman Lenroot announced hearings of the committee have been postponed for several days out of respect to the memory of ex - President Wilson. Former Secretary Fail refused to testify before the committee Saturday and passage of anew eflWpowering resolution is necessary for the committee to compel him to tell his story Meantime, Atlee Pomerene, the new Democratic counsel selected by President Coolidge to aid in court action for cancellation of the leases, held a series of conferences with Senators. CAUSE OF LUMBER YARD FI SOUGHT $50,000 Damage at Material Storage Building, Efforts are being made today by fire officials and officials of the Allen Wilkinson Lumber Company, 931 E. Michigan St„ to determine the origin of a fire that destroyed a large warehouse of the company Sunday. The fire, causing a damage unofficially estimated from $60,000 to $76,000, gained such a headway that a second alarm was necessary. Joseph Wilhelm, driver for Assistant Chief Johnson, sustained a sprained ankl e while fighting the tiames. and a number of firemen were shocked when a trolley wire fell. Sashes, door facings and other building material, were lost. It is thought that the fire started in the west wing of the building, used as a shipping room. The building is a two-story structure and. up until a short time ago, had been used as the office. The loss is covered by insurance, it is said.
