WILSON’S LAST VISIT HERE

Woodrow Wilson niadei his last visit to Indianapolis Sept. 4, 1919. The city had known him first as a candidate for President. He'returned as an advocate of the League of Nations. One of the greatest crowds that ever turned out to see a visitor to the city greeted the President from the time his train pulled into the Union Station from Oolumbus, Ohio, at 6 p. m. Accompanied by Mrs. Wilson he rode through the streets amid cheering throngs. His meeting was scheduled for the State fairground, and Meridian St. and Maple Road Blvd., leading to the fairground, were thronged. The doors of the coliseum were to be opened at 7 p. m. Hour, before that time the crowd jammed around (he building. When the dcors finally opened police had great difficulty In 891 MEN GET SENTENCES Falling Off of Convictions Since 1922 and 1923 Is Noted. Elman Puts a Tear Into His Concert at Murat

By WALTER D. HICKMAN A tear was placed by Mischa Elman Sunday in his concert at the Murat. I probably should say tears instead of a single tear. Elman, by playing "Ave Marie,” made the audience think seriously of the sunset of a life in a house on S St. in Washington. It seemed to me that Elman, responding to the mood of the hour, linked the sadnegg of all people to his playing of “Ave Marie.” I heard several people whisper softly the name of Woodrow W’ilson as they cried to themselves as Elman played this i(umber. The audience seemed to wejeome an emotional chance to express in seriougj thought and by a tear the passing of a great mind. It seemed that the “Ave Maria” spoke the heartaches of all people as Elman played. Men and women were not ashamed of their tears as they brushed them away. 'j It takes a man, an qtptist, to feel

yell aroused me. As I started to stand up the crash came and I was piled underneath the seats and baggage. As the fire ate its way to me I pulled my right leg loose and with it pushed myself out a window. The other leg was broken. Two men pulled me away just ao .he fire was scorching me. Mrs. Minnie Waymire, 5753 E. Washington TSt.: “The car split open right in front of my seat. I fell to the tracks. I ran to a window and after working for some time was able to free a man with a broken leg. I carried out several more, but it was too much for me. When one man said his feet were burning’and pleaded for me to shoot him I could not bear it any longer.” Mrs. Ina Trueblood, Chesterfield, Ind.: “A young man ahead of me was thrown backwards, breaking

while another had a small piece of a brown woolly overcoat on his body. A pair of suspenders were attached to a small piece of blub serge suit on one body, while another had a piece of a brown hat ot\ the head. Several small red imitation rubies were turned in. Superintendent Miles of the State Reformatory indentlled the body of J. *H. Clark of Jeffersonville, Ind., who was the instructor of printing at the institution, from the laundry mark J. H. C. on the shirt and a cuff link. He is survived by a widow and two children. Merle 30, and Earl, 25. Charles Wiseman of New Albany, Ind., instructor of carpentry at the reformatory, was identified by his clothing by a brother-in-law, J. R. Flanigan, of Connersville, Ind. Traffic Jam at Scene It was estimated that 1,100 automobiles an hour passed the spot Sunday, where the wreck occurred. Only north-bound traffic was permitted. Aid in regulating the traffic was asked from Ft. Benjamin Harrison. A detail of twenty men under direction of A. P, Jones. Anderson, Madison County highway superintendent and Arthur Daniels, Madison County sheriff, kept the traffic moving. Jones took an I. O. O. F. emblem to the Anderson coroner's office. It had been found in the ashes at the scene of the wreck. Relatives and friends of Oswald Ryan. Anderson, thought he had been a victim of the wreck. He had gone to Louisville to speak at a Y. M. C. A. meeting. Relatives called the chairman of the meeting to learn if Ryan had arrived, believing he might have been on the car which crashed at Fortville. The chairman said Ryan had not arrived and was about to announce at the meeting that Ryan was missing when Ryan himself walked in. He had taken the car just before the one which was wrecked. Mrs. W. C. Butler. Lebanon, who was taken to Anderson suffering from shock and severe bruises, is the mother of Mrs. Everett F. Saxton, 3460 Graceland Ave. Married Two Months Mr. and Mrs. John T. Smirh. Ft. Wayne, who are in the Anderson hospital, had been married only two months. Smith is suffering from a fractured skull. Mrs. Smith was suffering from bruises and shock. The wife of Charles Weisman. New Albany. Is in a critical condition following the death of Weiseman. He was on his way to New Albany to see her. She was seriously ill. Three children also survive. He was instructor in carpentry at the Indiana State Reformatory at Pendelton. F*uneral probably will be held at the home Tuesday.

the pulse of the people, and this Elman did yesterday when he played this number as an encore. He seemed to preach a sermon of hope and love. That Is the way this number appealed to me. My eyes were so clouded that it was many minutes’ before I could enter into the spirit of the lighter numbers. Mischa Elman is today a serious artist. He seems to understand the mood of the people. He understands the soothing power of a tear when caused by helody playing upon the heart. This same man knows how to play “Hymn to the Sun,” from ”Cop d’ Or.” Elman knows how to catch the lighter moods as shown by his playing of his own arrangement of —Beethoven’s "Contredanse” and Loesser’s “California” (I-luhoresque After Paladilhe). This was another of Ona B. Talbot’s priceless musical contributions to the current season.
