The following article was written by a member of the Times' Bureau at Washington, following a personal investigation in this State. Mr. Mellett is touring various States to record political sentiment. He is recognized at Washington as a keen student of politics. This article is being published in Scripps-Howard Alliance newspapers in all parts of the country.—Editor s note. pr-KDIANAPOLIS What[ll ever the political effect of the Teapot Dome revelations may be elsewhere, it has just about knocked the last legs out from under Republican prospects in Indiana. These last legs were already decidedly shaky and a scandal as big as that revolving around Secretary Fall was scarcely needed to crumple them. The reasons are: Charges of forgery, embezzlement, issuance of fraudulent checks, obtaining money under false pretense, grand larceny and a few other things.

The crimes named are very much in the Hoosier mind because of twelve indictments pendinig in the Marion County Criminal Court against Governor Warren T. McCray. McCray, bankrupted in a stock farming enterprise, with liabilities of two millions and assets of about one-tenth that amount, now has to defend himself against the criminal charges listed. For weeks, long before the Teapot really exploded, while it was only simmering, so to speak, the Republican regular's were fairly despondent. They admitted they saw no chance of victory for the State ticket next fall, but had some hope for the presidential candidate. Now many of them

They talk about Tiis geographical availability, rather than his statesmanship; about his acceptability to all factions, rather than his program for curing national and international ills. They particularly urge, with a hopeful eye, the prospect of a deadlock between the McAdoo and the anti-McAdoo forces. Ralston, of course, is Tom Taggart’s candidate. He used to run regularly for Governor

for Taggart and when finally elected five years ago, made good Taggart’s judgment by proving an excellent executive. A year ago he was promoted to the United States Senate. Taggart undoubtedly will go to great lengths to make Ralston the presidential nominee. It is a question, however, whether he has bound himself to the plans' of Boss Murphy and Boss Brennan, as popularly alleged, to play the game any way necessary to beat McAdoo. People close to Taggart assert he is against McAdoo only because he is for Ralston. If Ralston’s chances go glimmering in the convention, they say, Indiana delegates will not be committed to some other candidate as the result of any trade. Taggart’s loyalty to the party is cited in support of this and his natural penchant for picking winners. They point proudly to the names of the men he lias “sent” to M ashington— Benjamin Shively, John W. Kern, Thomas R. Marshall and Ralston. He will aid a weak presidential candidate, they are sure, just to beat McAdoo. As in other States, the only outsider's name heard in con-

versation with plain voters is McAdoo’s. McAdoo is leavin gthe field clear for Ralston, which is simple prudence if nothing more, for Ralston could beat him in Indiana. Hiram Johnson has filed in the Republican primaries in this State. Four years ago he ran a close second to Leonard Wood, as the result of energetic speaking in many cities. His State manager, Clarence Martin, expects him to repeat this effort and talks confidently of results. In 1920 Johnson won the support of the large Irish element by his fiery condemnation of the League of Nations and the Versailles Treaty.
