Bissell, Indianapolis, chief deputy inspector of the boiler department, State industrial board. , That the danger to life still exists is indicated by the fact that of the 15,000 boilers in the State, approximately 9.000 are inspected by insurance companies under supervision of the State boiler department while the State itself checks up on the condition of 4,000, a part of which are fol-low-ups on insurance inspections. “The abnormal amount of new construction, expansion of business, re- ! vamping of plants due to the dull period of 1921-1922, has created an unprecedented demand for steam boilers,” Bissell points out. A uniform boiler law was passed by the House and Senate of the 1923 General Assembly, but was not signed by Lieutenant Governor Edgar Bush, due, it is said, to an oversight. Five lives were lost in 1923 due to defective boilers at Terre Haute, Huntington and Barber. And that despite the fact 4,054 boilers were inspected by four State workers, Bissell adds.
