Sistine Choir and Hempel Bring Messages in Songs
By WALTER D. HICKMAN j n 1 PIRITUAL glory was reflected I ,3 I In song by the Sistine Chapel I 1 Choir. The soothing power of the memory of home, sweet home, was felt when Frieda Hempel made a sort of a domestic spiritual out of “Home, Sweet Home.” These were my thoughts after sitting through the entire concerts of Frieda Hempel at the Murat Sunday afternoon and of the Sistine Choir at night. Music has value when it gets into your heart and when you forget that you are in a theater. While Miss Hempel was singing “Home, Sweet Home,” with the words ringing out clearly and tenderly, I forgot that I was in a numbered seat in a theater. Home became to m a reality, no

longer a dream. The singer seemed to unlock a door in my heart and for many minutes I was happy in the thought of home. It takes a great artist to do this, but she unlocked in my soul a, door which seemed always to have been closed in the past. “Home. Sweet Home” became a great American spiritual to me while Frieda Hempel was on the stage. I know that the years have passed since Miss Hempel was the reigning opera favorite, but she has come back in much of her glory and charm with her “Jenny Lind” concerts such such as she gave at the Mura,t in costume Sunday afternoon under the direction of Ona B. Talbot.-* “The Shadow Song” from “Dinorah” has been one of nig- real favorites

since I was introduced to real music. The high flute-like tones hold me spellbound and Miss Hempel did that yesterday in this number. You can compare her work with that of Galli Curei. 1 found both satisfying. During the famous “Echo Song,” rendered as Jenny Lind did it seated at the piano playing her own accompaniment, Miss Hempel probably struck the high peak of her concert with the exception of "Home. Sweet Home.” In the "Echo Song” she seemed to bring back some of the alleged glory of the famous Jenny. Haven’t the space to go into detail regarding the other numbers or the splendid way Miss Hempel answered encores. She was assisted ty Coenraad V. Bos at the piano and by Louis P. Fritze. a flutist. After all is said about this artist, it is "Home. Sweet Home,” that I will remember on the Hempel program. She/ seems to have engraved its melody right upon my heart. In considering the Sistine Choir, those singers from the Vatican, Rome, it is not necessary to select any one

number, but rather examine the effect these singers had upon one of the largest audiences of the season for a concert. The effect of the singing of this choir was spiritual. It was not a concert, but an event of such spiritual power an* strength that I had the feeling I had heard a master sermon. I noticed that many people lingered in their seats several minutes after the concert was over as if they hesitated to break the spell. I am going to be mighty plain in my words —my eyes were moisted when the last tone became a mem-O’-y. Never in my life have I heard such singing. Regardless of one’s religion, I am sure that'a new beauty was found by all people who visited the Murat last night. The Murat Theater became a sacred shrine of melody while this male choir was singing. At times the volume of the choir seemed to be as strong as a giant pipe organ. The spell became complete when the choir sang “Alleluia.” During this number part of the -choir sang from

the balcony, giving the effect of one group of Singers answering the other Here was one of the great musical treats of the season, the singing of the Sistine Choir. Ovation after ovation was extended Monsignor Antonio Rella, conductor, and the singers. Here was singing filled with the tenderest of spiritual emotion. It was an invitation by song to lead the right kind of life. Concerning Mitja Nikisch The Indianapolis Maennerchor on Sunday afternoon had the Hungarian pianist, Mitja Nikisch, as their music guest. The recital was received by an audience that appreciated to the fullest extent the brilliant playing of this artist. The program was one of the best

The program is as follows: Beethoven —Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue. Beethoven —Sonata Appassionato F Minor. Op. 57 (Allegro assai, Andante conmoto and Allegro ma non torppo). Chopin—Nocturne C Sharp Minor, Op. 27, No. 1. Ballade A Flat Major, Op. 47. Mazurka B Flat Minor, Op. 24, No. 4. Valse A Flat Major, Op. 42. Etude C Miyjr, Op. 10, No. 10. Liszt—Etude F Minor, "La Leggierezza.’’ Nocturne (Liebestraeume No. 3). Hungarian Rhapsody No. 12. Mitja Nikisch is a pianist who has been recognized by all the great critics in London and New York, and his playing, his sincerity, his thoroughness and an artistic ability mark him as one of the great pianists of the world.
