Maennerchor Will Present Nikisch
Mitja Nikisch, pianist, will appear In recital at the Academy of Music at 3 p. m Sunday under the auspices of the Indianapolis Maennerchor. Mitja Nikisch was born on May 21, 1900, in the first spring of anew century. Born into the home of one of the century's greatest musicians, it was but natural that his early steps shoujd have led the child Mitja into the realm of music. He was given a violin at an early age, but the genius of the boy seemed to find greater joy in the piano. With the example of his father expressing himself gloriously through the medium of a whole orchestra, young Mitja demanded a wider field for himself and at the age of 10 his father yielded to his wishes, and the violin was deflnitjly abandoned in favor of the piano. Mitja was placed under the famous pedagogue of the Leipzig Conservatory, Prof. Robert Teichmuller. The boy's father, himself a great pianist before he had taken up the baton, took personal supervision of his son’s studies, and under this excellent tuition and great inspiration, the genius of/the boy blossomed forth with rapid results. At the age of 13 Mitja Nikisch made his first public appearance, presenting Bach’s Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in such an astonishing performance that musical Leipzig went wild with excitement. -!■ -I- -IMIKE SCOTT HAS BEEN ON STAGE FOR 45 YEARS Forty-five years on the stage as a dancer and still stepping as lively as any youngster, is the record of Mike Scott, known as r ->-■•. l —j “Dublin’s Dancing -v Irishman.” who r / is appearing at |g' 1 the Lincoln j I 4IK Square the , * . !11 : half of this week - Mike will iSf celebrate his 60th birthday Jan. 21. and a ; He has been on the stage since he was 15, ar.d 11 :<a danced his PjjjKk way around the Sc&lga NS tayS world. PIPE OF PEACE IS BITTER TO INSIDE COUNCILFAGTION Opposition to City Departments Accompanied by Internal Strife, Although the city council’s 1924 slogan, ‘‘Cooperation and Harmony,” is but a few days old, the taste of the peace pipe already is becoming bitter to some councllmen. With opposition to certain city departments. come signs of factional lines within the council itself manifested during 1923 under the presidency of John E. King. Councilman John E. King was the only one of the nine counqilmen present at the administration banquet at the Columbia Club Saturday. The remarks indicated that the council had apparently been omitted as a target for bouquets for achievements of the administration, although he said council legislation made many of these things possible. Councilmen at inform#! meetings have centered their grievances of the two years of the Shank administra, tion on certain unfulfilled election promises, it was learned. Lack of park, playground and street improvements on the south side are included. Appropriations for new jobs and requests for additional employes will meet disfavor of councilmen in 1924. An ordinance appropriating money for the smoke inspector has failed to pass the council to date. Municipal cars for exclusive use of city officials and appropriations for interest on bonds also have been blocked. Transfer of funds whereby department heads “break even" at the close of the year will be less frequent in the future, councilmen say. Joseph L. Hogue, city controller, has already warned departments against the practice and has announced he will not recommend passage of transfer ordinances. "VVe have plenty of ’stuff' on the administration, and we're going to start opening up.” said one of the factional leaders of the council. "Apparently they haven’t made any efforts to cover their tracks, and it's all easy to find.” What situation will epen hostilities councilmen themselves dd' not agree upon.
