CITY TURNING TO BOOKS FOR REST FROMBUSY DAYS Circulation at Public Library Hits Highest Level in its History, Indianapolis, a little weary, prehaps, of the daily task, the never, ending' conflict with the hard, material things from which it makes its livelihood, is turning to the best doctors in the world for its relief —good books. In the past few days more books have been loaned by the public li- • u-ary than ever before in its history. The daily average approached 500. The long period in which Action has crowded non-flction to insignificance in the popularity of the public seems to be drawing to a close. Nearjy half the books loaned by the library now are non-flction, embracing the ealms of biography, history, the social sciences, technical treatiese3 and

the thousands of books of special interest which evade classification. Non-Fiction Increases This proportion, according to librarians, shows non-flction books to have increased in circulation far beyond previous records. The reason for it is one for conjecture. The desire for knowledge, expanding of individual interests and the diffusion of knowledge among persons of average intellectual equipment might be cited as causes. * Children readers are using non-flc-tion books more than ever before. Stimulation of interest in special subjects in the schools due to progress in educational methods might be the cause of this increase. More than 9,531 requests for special information were made in December. Information within the scope of each book department is combined into a clearing house for questions and answers of which the public is apparently taking advantage. 3,465 New Books The order department has on its records the recent purchase of 3,465 new books. cated a spirit which is still sending a constant stream of books. Many of those received at the opening of the campaign were advanced in age so that numbers of them were among the 11,496 books which were bound and repaired by the bindery in December. The aim of the library is to have a book for every citizen, librarians say. Indianapolis falls short of this goal, but not by far. Its total stock is 327,250, while Indianapolis’ population is estimated at 350,000. Yet these books are circulatin among 127,627 persons, more than one-third the tota' population.
