Noted Negro Tenor Sings Here Friday; San Carlo Opera Cos., Booked at Murat
VriOLAXD HAYES, negro tenor I of Internationa) reputation, I I will appear in recital at Caleb Mills Hall Friday night. This singer worked his way up from humble surroundings in the South and won an education and vocal development through his own efforts. The success of his preliminary public appearances encouraged him to try his fortunes in Europe three years ago. He first went to London, where he quickly became the most praised tenor of the day and where he sang by special command for King George in Buckingham Palace. This enthusiasm and popularity was repeated in Paris, his next objective, and again in Vienna public and press could not find words too high to describe his voice and his use of It. Roland Hayes has returned and is making a tour of his own country. From the first it has been evident that his success here is s great and greater, if possible, than his success in Europe. He has appeared with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and has given recitals In New York, Boston, Chicago and other cities of the South and West. The numbers follow. HINKLE TALKS ON MAINTENANCE OF ' GRAVELHIGHWAYS Tells Road School Problem of Eliminating Corrugations Solved, Bv Time* Special LAFAYETTE. Ind.. Jan. 9.—After experin.enting months on a gravel road in southern Indiana we are confident ot having solved the problem ..f taking ruts or corrugations out of this type of surface, A. H. Hinkle, maintenance superintendent of the State highway commission, told engineers attending the Tenth Annual Purdue Road School here today. The Hinkle method of overcoming corrugations is simple. In the main It consists chiefly of crushing gravel and stone so it will pass through a one-inch screen and applying the dust along with" screenings. He said the experiment had been tried for several months under most trying conditions, and to date all ex pectations for its success had been realized. So confident of the solution is Hinkle that the new plan will be adopted on all gravel and stone roads in the Indiana State system. The speaker emphasized the importace of dragging to prevent forma tion of corrugations. “Our experi ence determined that corrugation is greatly reduced by using a very heavy drag or grader to plane oft the sur face." he said. Hinkle sprang another surprise in road maintenance when he told how his division drags a road just after it is given a surface treatment of bituminous ma erial and clean stone chips. This innovation was started this past summer, tool: out the irregularities often to be found, and proved so successful that other States are now dragging their surface treated roads, he said.
