‘Little Red School House’ Is Still to Be Seen in Indiana
The little red school house still dots Tie map of Indiana, According to the 1923 report of Miss Blanche Merry, State attendance ofSeer, there are 4,511 one-room schools in rural districts. Marion County is third in the elimination of the old - fashioned school house of “Hoosier School Master” fame with only four onerocm schools. Hancock County is first with but one; and Randolph and IV'ayne Counties are next with two each. The total school enrollment county FORMER BROWNSTOWN POSTMASTER IS DEAD ( harles T. Benton Succumbs at Home of Son in California. By Times Specia BROWNSTOWN, Ind., Jan. 8 —Fu neral services for Charles T. Benton, 65, who died at the home of his son, Clyde Benton, at Whittier, Cal., Saturday. will be held here Thursday at 2 p. m. at the Methodist Church. The remains will be brought here Wednesday. Mr. Benton was a widely known Republican, serving here as postmaster from 1908 to 1916. He was active in civic and church affairs and a leader, in the community. Mr. Benton went to California two years ago in hopes of regaining his health. S. —Returned to Muncie from the Michigan City prison, where he was serving a life sentence for the murder of George Kling at a local factory two years ago, Hallett McHargue, recentlygranted anew- trial by the Supreme Court, was found not guilty on the original charge when tried in Circuit Court, but was adjudged criminally insane. He will be taken to the insane hospital in Michigan City at once. McHargue was both wounded and gassed in the World War and physicians say his brain is affected permanently.
