know I don’t eat stewed prunes” at breakfast time, I’ll warrant he’ll eat this prune cocktail at dinner time without a murmur. In the winter when succeulent vegetables are high and in some localities I hard to get, prunes are an important part of the diet. They should be used often in some form or other. Prune Cocktail Choose fine large prunes. Allow three prunes to each person to be served. Wash well through several waters and let stand in cold-water to cover over night. Bring slowly to the boiling paint in the same water, reduce heat and simmer until the water is absorbed and the prunes are tender, but not mushy or broken. Let stand In the liquid until cool. When cool cut in halves and remove stone. Cut each half in two and put in cocktail glasses. Add one teaspoon lemon juice, one teaspoon sugar and two tablespoons orange Juice to each glass and chill. Serve very cold. Ring of Prunes One pound prunes. cup sugar. 4 teaspoons granulated gelatin, whipped cream, candied cherries and citron. Happy Wife Comes to Defense of Husbands
Unhappy marriages and cases of untrue husbands and wives are aired so much that sometimes we almost forget that a great many marriages are not at all unhappy and a great many husbands and wives are as true after years of marriage as on the day they said “I do.”
Marriage vows are not always made only to be broken, evidence brought out In the divorce courts notwithstanding. Husbands are not alw’ays more considerate of their stenographers than of their wives. Women do not always nag their husbands to desperation. The happy homes do not provide material for gossip or scandal. But they do proride the sturdy foundation on which our country is built and without which it could not survive. Wife Defends Men Dear Martha Lee: I read the letter of ‘'Disgusted with Men.” in which she explained how much better she fares in factory than she did in her own home. She must not condemn all men because she grot hold of a flirt, or because there are a few married flirts where she is employed who try to pay her attentions. X Wive been married eleven years and have a man "pure gold.” He would give me his last, penny, if I would take it. He often laughs because I run all over town to get things cheaper. He took his last penny at Christmas time and spent it on me, while our neighbor took what he had and .spent It to please others and never gave his wife a thing. Such treatment would kill all that is good in me and leave a sting in the heart that nothing would remove But he cannot shake my faith in the nobility of my man or other true men I know. So please, "Disgusted.’’ don't class all men alike. I hope you find out some are different. A CONTENTED WIFE AND MOTHER. I am glad, Indeed, to have a letter showing the sunny side of marriage, instead of the dark side we see so often. I know there are many other women who feel just as you do. Stopping Profanity My Dear Mias Lee: X read the man’s answer about poolrooms, recently; in fact, 1 read both men's letters. Now I would like to know how to keep my husband from using profane language. I love him dearly, but I cannot stand such talk. I am not a | newlywed, but I never heard profane lar.- ! guage until X married. X have helped him i overcome many bad habits but at this one I I have failed He doesn’t swear directly at me. : but in ordinary conversation If you think i you might be able to help me, 1 would ceri tainly appreciate an answer, or if some man ! can give me a bit of advice. _ _ DISCOURAGED i Some men consider profanity an evlj dence of true masculinity. ConseI quently, many other wives suffer just I as you do. If your husband really wants to be [.broken of this habit, It will be easier. 1 You might call his attention to his ; profuse profanity by adopting a bit |of it yourself. When he realizes that |Jts use by him is as objectionable to | you as your use of It Is to him, he i probably will watch himself more earei fully. Don’t expect too much. After all, profanity, If it cotnes from the lips, not from the soul, Is not the worst habit hi the world. Good Leap Year Chance Dear Martha I,ce lam a young man of | marriageable age. But I cannot And a j steady girl lam a good worker dross well j and am not tho worst-looking fellow in the j world although not handsome. It seems that the majority of fellows I j know are like me. Os those who have j sweethearts, these sweethearts have no girl ! friends we could meet What I am afraid of is that If I don’t get started soon I will end an old bachelor. F. S. Your letter sounds like a lAp Year j advertisement. j Don’t worry. F. R., about meeting | the "right girl.” It’s better to wait a i while for her, than to try to force yourself to fall In love. Nine Years Difference Dear Miss Lee: 1. I am 10 years old and am going with a man 28 Is there too much difference in our ages? (He wants me to marry him.) 2. Is a girl 20 too young to marry? BOBBIE 1. Because of the fact that girls usually mature much younger than j men do. a difference of as much m | nine years in the ages of a man and j a girl need not affect their friendship or even marriage to any great extent. 2. Some girls of 20 are ready for marriage: others—a great many of them—are not. Dancing Girls ) Dear Miss Lee: We are girls 13 and 14 years old. We both go with boys of a different religion. Would you advise us to drop them on this account? Wo have danoed with them several times on the stage. We hate to give them up. DANCING GIRLS. I don’t know- why you danced on the stage—amateur productions, 1 presume. But I do know you are foolish even to think of boys except as playmates.

LETTER FROM JOHN ALDEN PRESCOTT TO SYDNEY CARTON Good heavens, Syd, I did not know you w’ere going to make such a terrible howdy-do over such a little thing as owning a baby—and he is such a little corker, too. I would be damned glad, if I were not married, to say I was the father in reality, as 1 am by adoption, of John Alden Prescott Junior. But then you see I have Leslie to think of. You speak of ruining the lives of two girls. Evidently Paula, .who is said to be getting $200,000 a year in moving pictures, is not ruined so any one can notice It just at present, and Leslie is not unhappy. From what you write me I gather Paula is sweeter than ever. She Would have to be going some to be sweeter than she was when I knew her. Isn't it strange, Syd. that in this day and age women are overturning all the old laws, all the old rules, all Uie old traditions? According to the creed of our mothers and fathers I should be the one drawing down $200,000 a year and poor little Paula would be walking the streets in all kinds of trouble. Instead, I seem to be the one that just steps out of one scrape In time to get into another, while she, from all accounts, is tho most feted young woman in all Hollywood. However, you can tell her for me that I don’t exactly take stock in that beautiful story she told of giving the baby to Leslie for the saice of saving Leslie's life. I think there vya-s a little feeling in it, that as long as she thought the baby belonged to me, it was up to me to take care of it. That's neither here nor there at the present moment. I’ve got little John and I am going to keep him. Leslie adores him. eveii when she thinks he is yours. Romtimes T think I would almost welcome Paula stirring up a fuss because I am not happy keeping all this from Leslie. Indeed, my nerves are so on edge lately that I haven’t been a charming Individual to live with. In fact. I have come to the conclusion that Leslie is altogether too good for me. She is away f-om me now. She has gone to hid her father and mother good-by. They, are going across to see Alice presented at court, and between you and me. Syd. I am wonedring if Leslie thinks living with me is reward enough for missing all this wonderful trip abroad hobnobbing with royalty. This Is my way, old man, of telling COLDS “Pape's Cold Compound” Breaks a Cold Right Up Take two tablets every three hours until three doses ore taken. The first dose always gives relief. The second, and third doses completely break up the cold. Pleasant and safe to take. Contains no quinine or opiates. Millions use "Pape's Cold Compound." Price, thirty-five cents. 1 UCH great publicity has been I given to adrenalin during the past two years that from all parts of our country come inquiries concerning it and its use. Many reports of its wonder-working restorative cures have been greatly exaggerated, while some have apparently restored the dead (pronounced so) t olife. On Sept. 22 a case was reported from Grand Rapids, Mich., where a man 40 years of age was pronounced dead as a result of a 7,500-volt electric shock. A physician injected fifteen drops of adrenalin into his body. In two hours he revived and, in spite of serious burns, recovered. In the body itself, adrenab’n is also a real worker. It seems to be at the beck and call of the brain, when the occasion demands. Its secretion is discharged into the life stream (circulation) and aids in energizing muscular action in a number of ways. Anger is one of the causes for secretion by the suprarenal gland. There is some reason for your physician’s advice to avoid danger and discontent on all occasions. It serves to release adrenalin and increase blood pressure. It is strong as a stimulant and vitalizer, acting to &>ntraet the arteries. It is claimed, but not really substantiated, that this secretion will actually start the dead heart of a babe Into action. It starts, but does not continue very long. In recent use It has been called the aid of bloodless surgery. Its compellant action serves to drive the blood from parts affected and thereby greatly lessens the blood loss.
