Jackie and Billie are holding forth at the Palace as the real feature on the week-end bill. A woman has trained these birds to speak English. One bird insists that he “wants a cup of coffee.” Never have I heard birds talk better than Billie and Jackie. W. Slyter, were burned to death Thursday in a fire which destroyed the Slyter home on Carr Island in the Mississippi River near here. BARREtTfUNDS INCREASE City Handled 417 Assessment Rolls in 1923, Report Shows. The city issued $552,649 more in Barrett law bonds in 1923 than in 1922, according to annual report of Fred B. Akin. Barrett law bond clerk, to Joseph L. Hogue, city controller. Bonds were issued to the amount of $2,307,423.30, compared with sl.754,774.30 in 1922. Akin handled 417 assessment rolls in 1923, compared with 300 in 1922 and seventy-six in 1918. Barton Hotel Enlarged Lynn B. Millikan, owner of the Barton Hotel, 505 N. Delaware St., announced today the purchase of a three-story brick building from Abe Seligman, adjoining the hotel on the north, at a cost of $40,000. The addition will give the Barton a capacity of 160 rooms, Millikan said.
