PURDUE TEAM IS GIVEN BATTLE BV WABASH NETTERS Surprise Package Wrapped Up for Boilermakers, but Somebody Stubs Toe, By Times Special CRA VVFORDSVILLE, fnd.. Jan. 2. —The Wabash College netters had a surprise package all wrapped up for Purdue here Tuesday night, hut just as they were going to hand it to the Boilermakers somebody stubbed his toe and the thing was smashed to pieces. Purdue won, 27 to 22. Now the lans are saying like they said in football, “You never can tell about that Wabash team. Seems as though when you think they haven’t got a thing, watch out!” At the end of tne first half Wabash looked like winners with the score 17 to 10 in their favor. The Scarlet defense was working perfectly and Purdue baskets were very few. The second half was different. Wabash slowed up and Lambert’s five started with a rush that could not be stopped. The score was 21 to 17 before the Wabash team could get together. A large number of personal fouls were called on both teams, but the players could not make the free throws count. IRST BASEMAN GEORGE BURNS of Boston for Second J Baseman Bill Wambsganss of Cleveland. Tt’s dollars to doughnuts such a trade will feature 1924. While there has been much talk of such a transfer of players, a few minor details have caused the deal to hang fire. It is understood that these difficulties have been ironed out. Manager Speaker of Olav Hand feels he must get a first sucker if his club Is to l*e up in the race. The Cleveland leader dopes it. that at leat a dozen games were lost around the initial sack last year. He doesn’t want a repetition of such a performance. Having two good second basemen and no satisfactory first saeker. Speaker feels he can sacrifice one of these players to the great benefit of his ball club. The fact that Stephenson is younger than Wambs ganss, and a much more dangerous batsman, is no doubt his reason for being willing to swap the triple-p!ay hero. 1,000 PANS SEE BIG ELEVENS IN PASADENA BATILE Washington and Navy Teams Stage Thriller Contest and # Finish Even. By United News PASADENA, Cal., Jan. 2.—Before 40,000 cheering native sons and visitors from the East who lined the rockbanked slopes of the Rose Bowl Tuesday afternoon, the Naval Academy of Annapolis and the University of Washington fought to a 14-to-14 tie in the big Last-West game of the football year. Come From Beliind Twice the Washington Huskies came from behind to tie the score. The Middies crossed the western goal line at the opening of the second period. A Washington touchdown followed a few moments later, bu*. the Navy took the lead with a second touchdown as the quarter ended. The Middies then held until the final quarter, when Washington again evened the score. The game contained everything that goes to make up a thrilling contest — long forward passes, brilliant end runs and plunging bucks through the line. To J. C. McKee, quarter hawk for the Navy, goes credit for the ability of Annapolis to emerge from the battle with divided honrs. Hurls Passes Attack of invaders was built largely around this dashing lad from Butler, Pa., who covered the ground In fleetfooted strides and displayed an uncanny ability to hurl the hall down the field. It was this feature of the naval attack which resulted in the East’s two touchdowns. Wilson and Abel, veteran backfield men from Seattle, and Bryan, the stalwart linesman, were stars of the fight that Washington put up. The weather was perfect. A warm sun beamed but its rays were lost in the chil. of the afternoon. Tuesday’s game was the eighth East-West contest played at Pasadena. Os the number. Western teams have won four, Eastern teams two and two have been ties.

The contest means quite a lot to the Baptists, who will have a chance to show Just how good they are to hostile fans. All net fans in Indiana are pulling hard for a victory. Up to Franklin Franklin must win to uphold the prestige of this State.
