the business of Kingan & Cos. had its beginning in Belfast, Ireland. At that time the dressed hogs were brought in by the farmers, and the hams, bacon and shoulders cured and marketed by the packer. The founders of Kingan & Cos. started their business on the principle that there is always a market for high quality goods and with the special cure which they perfected they were able to turn out meats of such delicious flavor that within a short time their goods became widely and favorably known. The resultant rapid growth of their business, along with the increasing demand for American meats, finally determined them to come to the United States, where a greater opportunity was offered for widening the scope of their activities. In 1851 a house was established in Brooklyn, N. Y., for the packing of meats for export to Great Britain, but it was later decided to move farther West, so in 1853 a hog slaughtering and packing plant was opened in Cincinnati. The business so expanded from then on that they were obliged to look further afield for hogs to supply their trade. In their operations in Cincinnati Kingan & Cos.,

found that they obtained the best quality and most suitable hogs for their purpose from Indiana. So in 1862 they moved to Indianapolis, where their plant has increased from year to year to its present proportions. In this plant was first tried and perfected, after many costly experiments, the application of artificial refrigeration to the chilling and packing of meats, thus creating winter conditions in the chill rooms throughout the summer months, making summer killing possible. in the meat packing and live stock industries and is considered one of the most important industrial developments in the history of commerce. Kingan & Cos. have branches and selling connections in the principal cities in this country and besides shipping their product throughout the United States, are regular and large shippers to the chief importing ports of the world. During the evolution of their business, Kingan & Cos. have steadfastly adhered to their original principle of producing first quality goods, and this accounts for the enviable record held by their meats, lard, etc., both in this and foreign countries.] The illustration at the top of the page shows a bird’s-eye view of a part of Kingan’s Indianapolis plant. In the center of the page is a reproduction of the well-known “Reliable” trademark and at the bottom are photographs of a “Reliable” Ham and a pound carton of “Reliable” Sliced Bacon. These photographs will give you an idea of how the hams and bacon look, but not how they taste. The flavor can not be pictured, but one taste will make you realize how sweet, tender, juicy and altogether delicious hams and bacon can really be.
