Weekly Book Review ‘Blind Bow-Boy’ May Be Art but If It Is Real Art Then Something Is Wrong
By WALTER D. HICKMAN f y—i | XIT “The Blind Bow-Boy" I I"*, I from my memory box. L I This so-called literature of the hour is by Carl Van Vechten. author of “Peter Whiffle,” and many others. I read this book for review because of numerous requests. I journeyed over to L. S. Ayres & Cos. and obtained a copy. I know that this book is a “best seller." I discovered that my copy contains the following information, “Copyright, 1923. by Alfred A. Knopf. Inc. First and second printings before publication., Published August, 1923.” If I wanted to pose as mental resident of Greenwich Village, I probably would “rave" over some of the suggestive ultra modem dirt in this book. I know that there are those who are fond of “The Blind Bow-Boy.” They term it tantalizing brain food with a whale of imaginative thrill. Maybe so. I was glad when I had finished the thing, f But it is claimed that it is delightfully written. Will grant that, but the subject matter, as I found It, is quite a mess. If this is real literature, then Mother Goose is a masterpiece. Bunch of Odd People in This Modern Story In “Blind Bow-Boy,” the author Introduces you to a fine bunch -of erot-

ic, neurotic, strand, wild unmoral moderns who imply by their actions and concentration that they eat birdseed and sleep any place where fancy and desire takes them. The chief charcter is Harold Prewett, who was “raised” as a boy should be, but whose father decided that he should have “naughty” and worldly experience. So father hires a questionable male companion for Harold. It takes quite a time for Harold to get up steam for his voyage, but when he starts there is no speed limit. I recommend this book to nobody.
