SCHOOL BOARD ‘FRONT’ QUIET AFTER FISTIC ENCOUNTER
Architects Are Selected for New Shortridge, West Side and Colored High Buildings and for Two Grade Additions. The midnight fist fight between Charles L. Barry and Bert S. Gadd. members of the Indianapolis school board, at the board meeting Tuesday night was the principal topic of discussion chroughout the public school system today. Barry started the battle when he abandoned oratory for ists in fight to retain two of his appointees on the school oard pay roll after Gadd. chairman of the finance committee, ad branded Barry's statement that the men were discharged oca use he (Barry) recommended their employment as a lie. The two men, John Logan and
/rank Garrir.gan, have been employed n the office of Frank L. Reissner, secretary of the board. Gadd, in reporting for the finance committee, sked that they be dropped on recommendation of Reissner as,a matter of vonorny. No criticism of their work was made. Instantly Barry was on his feet objecting strenuously. “These men are removed in the dying moments of this board’s life because I recommended them,” he shouted. “That is a lie.” Gadd interjected. Gadd Is Surprised Barry, who was standing at the time next to Gadd, who was seated, struck Gadd a heavy blow on the side of the head. Apparently the attack came as a surprise to Gadd and he attempted to get to his feet. Before he could arise and get squared away Barry was on top of him swlngng both fists. Gadd finally got out of his chair only to be pushed to the floor. Standing over Gadd as he lay on che floor Barry leaned down and struck several times before he was dragged away by spectators and school off* cials. “You dirty whelp,” said Gadd. “You have insulted me time and time again,” Barry said. “I know what you insinuated,” Gadd answered, “it was that these men were let out because they wero Catholics and that is untrue." “You belong to an order which is opposed to them and they have as muen right to hold office as any one else, they pay taxes the same as any one else,” Barry cried. “I know my name was published in Tolerance, but I never said I belonged to an order,” Gadd replied. Both Make Statements Hostilities finally were brought to a close and just before the board aO ->umed both men made statements. “I understood Barry to intimate certain things he said he did not intend to intimate. I want to apologize to rhe board for the term I applied to him and I regret the incident,” Gadd said. “I felt deeply that two men, my appointees, were removed without the full hearing of the board. I am very sorry the unfortunate incident occurred ” Barry said. Although it was after midnight when parliamentary order supplanted the London prize ring rules, and chairs and scattered papers were straightened, the board proceeded to take the first step in many years to- ! ward relieving the over-crowding of l the high schools which has become such a serious problem. High School Move Started tin reccemendarion of the buildings and grounds committee. Adolph Einhard*. architect- we-e selected for 4 new Shortridge high school at Thirtyfourth end Pennsy.vama S.s. a side high school to be located at the corner of Sheffihl Ave. and W. Wash ingion St., and a colored high school to be located on ground adjoining School No. iT, West and Eleventh Sts. Preliminary plans were ordered prepared immediately. It will be necessary to purchase or condemn land for the colored and west side schools. Estimated costs of the new school.-* when completed are: Shortridge. 2.500 pupils, 11.500,000; colored high school. 1,000 pupils, 1500,000 West Side high school, 1,000 pupils, *500,000. A four-room addition at No. 27, Park Ave. and Seventeenth St., to cost about $60,000, and a two-room addition at No. 39, 801 S. State Ave., to cost about $20,000 also were authorized. Architects selected were: Shortridge, Kopf & Wooling; West Side, Vonnegut, Bohn & Mueller; Colored, Harrison & Turnock: No 27, Charles E. Byfield; No. 39. Myers & Coffin. Barry opposed the program on the grounds that the entire matter should be left until after the reorganization of the board next month, when two new members will replace Gadd and James D. Allison. He refused to vote for architects. Allison charged that the voting showed “there had been a frame-up in selecting architects. School teachers will be made happy by getting their salaries Dec. 21, four days before Christmas, instead of waiting until the first of the month, which is the regular pay day. Firemen Visit Courthouse A short circuit In the wiring in the elevator shaft at the Marion County Courthouse caused the downtown fire apparatus to answer a call late Tuesday Fire officials said no dam age was done.

joined by motorists from other cities along the route. The two motorcade j meeting at Princeton, ten miles south of the bridge. Governor McCray of Indiana spoke on his plans for extension of the State highway system. He said he approved the building of 1,000 miles of hard surfaced roads to cross the State in each direction. Such a program, he said, would entail a total expenditure by the fall of 1925 of about $27,000,000. The celebration was held under tne auspices of the Dixie Bee Line Association assisted by the Chambers of Commerce of Princeton and Vincennes. Business interests at Vincennes and Princeton were suspended and schools were dismissed. William J. Tttius, State bridge engineer, designer of the structure, was
unable to be present. The bridge is the largest on a State road in the Middle West. It consists of eight steel spans and twenty-one concrete spans of a total length of 2,0002.6 feet. The length of the south approach is 3,672 feet and of the north approach, 7,448 feet, a total length of approaches and spans of the bridge of nearly three miles. Approximately 1,500,000 feet of structural steel Were used. In addition there are 250,000 pounds of reinforcing steel In the concrete formations. All told there are 6,200 cubic yards of concrete and 13,000 lineal feet of timber piling. The bridge weighs approximately 52,000,000 pounds. Engineer Titus estimates that sixty per cent of the cost of the bridge ie below the water line.
