Delilah Uses Cruel Shears on Samson; Margie Nearly Passes Out at Keith's
By WALTER D. HICKMAN ELILAH, the dame of history who cut off the. locks from Samson’s head, held a nasty pair of scissors when she did the deed. By doing the barber shop stunt without a union card, Delilah has become known as one of “the world s worst women.” Anyway, this is the jolly sentiment of a grand piece of burlesque and , fun as done by j Carrie Reynolds Spy*. view at the Mu W? rat. Miss Reyn i. a marks the" woman CLIF always has to HECKIXGER pay. In the course of the song, “The World’s Worst Women.” Miss Reynolds sings and plays Cleopatra, also the woman of history who wanted a man’s head on a plate as well as Helen of Troy. This is delightful fun as j done by these two. This comedy song j held up the show and is the easy comedy winner of the entire show. Nice work. “Wild Sower” is the show which has the melodious strains of the much danced "Bambalina.” It is the most popular of several tuneful numbers. I liked also "Wild Sower,” "April Blossoms” and “Tou Can’t Blame a Girl for Dreaming.” The best singing is done by Eva Olivotti as Nina and Paul Donah as Guido. Both of the leading roles aie pleasantly done. Both dance well, especially In the famous “Bambalina” number. Clever dancing Is done by i Jack Dempsey and Margaret Wood, j Bobby Bernard does not seem at home in (the comedy role of Gaston La Roche. He doesn’t put over his comedy in a natural way. The book does not contain as much real fun as I expected, but the show is strong on story and melody. Maybe I expected too much of Bernard. “Wlldflower” is one of those tuneful, proper, well-mounted musical comedies which contains several haunting melodies. The original company is still In New York, being now In Us forty-fifth week. The chorus of the company here is splendid. They dance and sing well. This Is one of the best trained choruses I have seen this season. From a scenic standpoint, the show is beautiful, but short on comedy. “Wlldflower” is a show that the whole family may attend and enjoy. It Is clean and tuneful. At the Murat today and Wednesday. + + + Tou Must Come Over and See Margie and Jay Margie is acting terrible again. She walked down Broadway the other day and saw nobody she liked better than herself. Margie remarks that she “did have one or two narrow escapee” and allows that she was nearly going to pass out of the picture. Oh, my, Margie does say the strangest and Hr M. funniest things. Margie is never p> A going to get mar--3k i rled because she feels that floors fS, walked BSr* ; on. not to he dragged over. The poor old MSmSs&'j' dear took an j '■ j? ’* voyage the HL other day and {L , she became so " WEL u; that she thought she STANLEY ' would throw her ROGERS life le s s body Afl MARGIE overboard. Oh, dear, Margie is so wise. IB other words, this is a little bit of the wise chatter of Stanley Rogers, talking of her friend Margie, with Jay Brennan. When Bert Savoy, the original friend of Margie, ; was killed last summer, Brennan engaged Rogers as h!s red-headed companion of fun. Rogers is a clever impersonator. He is attempting to do the role just as the famous Bert did.

The result is satisfactory, but there was only one Bert Savoy and no one will ever equal him in his work. You may not like this smart fun. but it is awfully well done at Keith's this week. Might state right now 4iat lyeith’s has a real fun show this week. It gets a grand start at the hands of Heras and Wills, who start out as singers and end up as splendid comedy acrobats. Sargent and Marion assist the Fonr Camerons in the closing number of their nonsense. The Camerons are rapid and nifty funmakers. Here is something new in the comedy line. They handed me a bunch of real laughs. Billy Glason found the going rather difficult yesterday, but he kept at them until he convinced them that he could put over a song and tell a story. Mile. Marguerite and Frank Gill offer a smart dance revue with the aid of Frank Johnson and Leslie Hall. The act is beautifully mounted. Nothing better seen here this season in the dance line. Many bows and the like. Sargent and Marvin appear as the Two Musical Dudes In the second act. A clever jazz band and the dancing of Alice Tyrell put over the act of Jack Allyn’s Aces. Hero is an act which will hold you In your seats until the curtain goes down. A mighty smart and clever bill at Keith's this week. -!- -I- -IFour Girls Are Merit Winners at the Palace
Topping the merit-winning class at the Palace for the first half of the week are the Four Rubini Sisters in a smart and well arranged Instrumental offering. Gne of the features is a piano duet by two of the sisters with the aid of the orchestra. One of the sisters goes into the pit and directs the musicians. This act belongs to the better musical offerings. The cello work Is better than one usually hears In vaudeville. The audience showed its appreciation of the work of these girls. Another melody winner is “The Four of Us,” a male quartet. They sing the popular sort of songs In the way an audience likes to hear them. They stopped the show when I was present. Amac opens the show with a card trick, not with a regular deck of cards but with three big cards. He places a woman behind one of the cards. The audience attempts to guess where the woman is. The audience is nevor right. Clever work. Something new in the disappearing woman stunt. Marget and Merrell offer Irish. French and Chinese dances and songs during an act called, “The Tourist. ‘ Lew Lener and Nancy Belle appear In "Flirtation,” a small musical comedy. This act is not new to Indianapolis. * * The movie feature Is Tom Moore in "Harbor Lights.” At the Palace today and Wednesday. + + + Tommy Gibbons Proves That He Is Real Variety Star Wildest applause greets Tommy Gibbons when he appears inside the familiar “roped arena” at the Lyric. Tommy has to do very little to make the fans, women as well as men, break into ecstasies. The gallery gods ae tually whistled and whooped. Tommy told them how he stayed fit teen rounds with Dempsey. He appeared In a three-round exhibition with his sparring partner. Eddie Kane, Tommy’s manager, explain:* h" is trying to arrange a match witn Jack Dempsey at Tia Juana, but that the Mexican tax of 7 cents a foot on lumber is a stumbling block to tne building of an arena there. The rest of the acts are better than the regular run of vaudeville. Harrison Moss presents a surprise afi which is good for a number of hearty laughs. I can’t take the edge off his act by telling you about it. Two girls and a man. the title 'Three Stylish Steppers,” present a 1 clever dancing turn. Cora Young blood’s band of six young*women play jazz and classic music equally well Harry Sullivan and Ruth Meyers co.i ! vulse with a flivver that, like the “One ! Hoss Shay” falls apart. The flivver 1 itself cavorts surprisingly. It is go'*d fun. Rosa Valyda has an unusual vdice. She sings Kipling’s “The Road to Mandalay,” especially well. Gordon and Healey dole out the usua. hokum about married life in “Wedded Blues.’’ Screen program includes Sid Smith in “Don’t Play Hookey;’’ a Martin travelogue, “Wild and Wooley,” and Pathe review. Gibbons is surrounded with a real vaudeville show. It is a safe thought that the Lyric will do big business this week. The Apache coolly throws her to the floor. Follows a wild, at times ferocious, dance, in which the Apacc.e flings the waif about his head in mad, impetuous movements, only to fling her under the table or inttf the corner. He laughs quietly, cruelly, as she, unable to rise, crawls back for more. As the flower-girl cjutches at his knees, the Apache, petulant, pulls her from the floor, throws her Into his arms and continues the orgy, this time, instead of flinging her from him, he clutches her to him and sinks his blade into her heart. Dropping the limp figure in disgust, he slinks back to his table, where he continues his solitaire. The habitues of the rendezvous, accustomed as they are to death, move threatingly toward him, but slink back as the Apache flashes his stiletto. A gendarme enters. The Apache polls the lifeless form to him and dances the dance of death while the gendarme looks on. The Apache, thinking the gendarme has left, throws the body from him. The gendarme, turning, gets his man. This is the gem set in unusually good burlesque at the Capitol. The chorus dances well, the singing is good and the scenes colorful. The “ten musical spillcrs” are ten mulatto Jazz-maniacs who know jazz when they hear it and krfow how to play it. They run wild. They should be allowed more time for encores. "Giggles" is the name of the show, and the place the Capitol Theater, ail this wepk.
