Will Rogers Teases a Bear in Comedy; Screen Reflects Another Glyn Novel
By WALTER D. HICKMAN __ 3 ILL ROGERS has taken a bear \)y for a partner. FL—LJ This happens in “Hustling Hank,” a brand new Rogers movie at the Apollo this week. Rogers surrounds himself with an unusual east in this comedy. The “cast” includes an entire barnyard. including “chick.jSpHg men and women. crs on the screen i puts the natural. J quiet Rogers 5 touch to every- / thing he does. He is cast as a lazy western ranch-hand who accompanies an WILL ROGERS eccentric old maid on a trip to photograph “wild animals.” Rogers has some funny scenes with a trained bear. This bear is a wonder and the last few feet of the film is loaded with laughs, as both Robers and the bear are present. You always expect Rogers to do something different. He does a “classical daree” by the aid of a slow action camera. Clad in a nightgown, Rogers is stung by a bee. The action of the bee starts Rogers on a wild dance. This is real movie Iburlesque. If you like the brand of fun filmed by Rogers I am sure you will like this one. There is another important event at the Apollo this week besides the Rogers movie. It is the first screen version of “Tiger Rose,” with Lenore I Trie in the same role which brought her fame on the stage. This is, as you know, another Northwest Mounted story. Your interest will not center so much upon the story as the work of Miss LTric. She brings a 1> iritimate method to the screen. She gives a remarkable screen performance. The picture is aided by some beautiful natural “shots.” There are several tense moments to this drama. The work of Forest Stanley as Michael Devlin is splendid. The cast includesJoseph Dowling, Sam De Grasse and Claude Gillingwarer. At the Apollo all week. -I- -I- -IElinor Glyn Brings Another Love Story' to the Screen There is lot of magic in the name of Elinor Glyn. Since she wrote “Three Weeks” her name has hid value. I was cnnvinc—i ySB that when I visited the Circle to see what had been done Corinne Griffith ■y ej •- ‘if*: as the little rich ,• * * girl who married ■ jm &V} i , 7m *-h. e man she loved £*3r un< ler most unyfcll.MKar usual conditions. 9b rWmm The theater was IBHf.‘ not only crowded, m r *>£t&Fk hut all standing room was taken. CORINNE Elinor Glyn knows GRIFFITH how to name a story. No doubt about it. You probably know that in the past I haven’t been so wild over Elinor Glyn’s contribution to the free love literature of the day. I must, in all fairness, admit that “Six Days” is good theater. It has a title, it has a competent cast and it hits an unusual love theme. There are tears and suspense in its love theme. It contains all the attributes of a sue- 1 cessful box office picture. The scenes devoted to the strange adventures of Laline Kingston and Dion Leslie while imprisoned for six days in a dugout in France, are splendidly bandied. Credit also goes to the director for the way he handled the scenes at the Paris opera, I found the story interesting because it is different from the rank and file or the ordinary love story. The cast of “Six days” is as follows: Laline Kingston Corinne Griffith Ilinn Leslie frank Mayo j Mrs Kingston Myrtle Stedinan | Lord Chetwyn - Claude King Clara Leslie f Maude George Jere Jerome . . Spotliewood? Aitkin Richard Kingston Charles Clary I must say a word of praise for the 'ircle orchestra. This week the overure is “Sixth Hungarian Rhapsody,” by Liszt. Modest Altschuler is nearing the goal of perfection because his players are responding to his baton In a splendid way. We have real orchestral playing at the Circle this week. -I- I- I-

For the first half of the week the Isis is presenting Richard Talmadge in “The Unknown.” In this movie Talmadge matches with and muscles with a gang of crooks'. The cast includes Andre Tournier, Mark Fenton and J. W. Early. Talmadge has a chance to show that he is an athlete. The present bill includes a Billy West farce. “One Exciting Evening.” On Thursday, Gladys Walton opens In “The Wild Party.” a comedy farce. She plays the role of a girl reporter fcn a newspaper. Wally Van drives recklessly across the continent to save his father a half million in ‘‘The Drivin’ Fool,” the photoplay at the Lincoln Square theater today. It has the usual thrills and comedy. time-worn gags which pull laughs from the audience, and Jack Dugan impersonates an old woman. Bill includes a round of the serial “Fightin’ Blood.” (Bq Observer.) -I- -I* -1Mary Pickford in Second Week of Stay at Ohio Mary Pickford is now in the second week of her engagement in “Rosita” at the Ohio. interesting program yesterday afternoon to the members of the club. The program opened with Haydn’s “Quar:et in G Major,” Op. 77, No. 1. The four movements “Allegro,” “Adagio,” “Menuetto” and “Presto” was rendered in the masterful manner that one expects from the Flonzaley Quartet. . This was followed by “Tema con variazionl” Op. 7. The applause was so tnehusiastic that “Notturno” by Boridine was given for an encore. The last thing on the regular program was the four movements of Schurmann’s “Quartette in A Major” Op. 41 No. 3.; This is a very difficult number and displayed to the fullest extent the technical skill of the quartette. After the Schlrmann number the most brilliant and interesting number of the whole concert was given as an encore. This was the “Lento” of Dvorak. This is an American quarteitte arranged from negro melodies by the great composer and is rarely heard on the concert stage. It is very interesting, melodious and was greatly appreciated by the audience. As usual the Maennerchor brought again to the city the finest of music, and played by those who know how to bring out its full beauty. (Reviewed -by T. Ganna Walska, wife of Harold McCormick, Chicago millionaire, appeared with the company at night. She visited Nelson Trowbridge’s office Saturday afternoon. Trowbridge admits that she appeared Saturday night in one of the roles. There is some difference of opinion concerning the role she played as she was not programmed. She w’as veiled in mystery and protected from the public and press while here. Those who know claim she played the role of the Countess and others claim she was Cherubino. It is said that she is backing the company financially. The Wagnerians wdll return next season, it is announced. They deserve support.
