PASTORS CAN SOLVE SABBATH PROBLEM BV STRONG SERVICE Dr, Hyde Points Out Necessity of Observing Sunday in Worship. “The Sabbath problem could be solved, and would be well on the way to solution, by maintaining strong church services.” Dr. M. B. Hyde. pa3 tor of the Grace M. E. Church, declared Sunday in discussing “The Sabbath Problem.” “The word Sabbath means rest and we associate with it the idea of worship as so essential feature,” he said. “Adam taught it to his sons, so that at ‘the end of days they brought their offerings. “There is really no ‘Sabbath problem' any more than the rest of the commandments are problematic. The leal problems is in the perverseness of tiie human mind. “There is certainly no obscurity in the language, 'Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.' Tlte Divine Viewpoint. Regarding Sabbath Day “In thinking of the divine viewpoint we must remember that God had no thought of himself. The commandment was given in the light of the great moral order under which man must live, and that which was an absolute necessity for man. That is the total life of man. He evidently had man’s physical well being in view. “A physician has said, I never i knew a man who has worked seven days in a week without becoming a wreck in health. Th Sabhaii; law is as clearly written in the human body as In the word of God. Mind culture must have been covered in the divine thought. “There must be tremendous signifi- i cance in the statement, ‘as His : (Christ’s) custom was He went into j the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read.’ The Christ ran counter to literalisms of His time, but j in that one thing He emphasized worship on the Sabbath in God’s house. : Sabbath observance is fundamental, and whatever moral breakdown there !s, and there is an ahundance of it, is due to the almost universal disregard of the Christian Sabbath in this country. A Comparison in Church and Theater Attendance. “The fact of this disregard is shown in the small gatherings in the churches in many sections. In New York for example, on a given Sabbath in 673 churches there was a total morning attendance of 27,727, an av- j •rage of 48. Two moving picture theaters had 14,000 in attendance.” SCIENCE AND CHURCH Dogmas and Known Modem Facts Conflict, Chemist Says. A scientist’s attitude on religion conflicts in many cases with conventional dogmas of the church, in the opinion of Harry E. Jordan, Indian-

apolis chemist, speaking Sunday morning at the All Souls Unitarian Church. "No sincere student of biological or physical science is an atheist,” Jordan said. “A religious conception that encourages careless living is a detriment to the system that encourages scientific life saving.” MODERN LIVING TOO FAST Willingness to Follow Christ Is Needed. Speaker Says. “We are burning the candle too much at both ends in these days.” Dr. Samuel Edward Long, head of the Bible department. Indiana Central College. declared at the Cad*e Tabernacle Sunday afternoon to more than 600 persons. “It is not how long we live, but how well we live. We tire living faster than the patriarchs did. We probably live more in the short spun of sixty years now than Methuselah in the 960 or more years he lived. He will live longer If we listen to the word of the men who knew the Son and are willing to walk with God as taught by Christ." THREE POINTS TO SUCCESS Jarvis Tells of Kdward Bok's life in Address. Three points that helped Edward Bok to success were described by U. Walter Jarvis, superintendent of the city parks, at the Y. M. C. A. Boys’ Big Meeting Sunday. The points brought out were Bok’s love for his mother, his readiness to fight for right, and his close observation. CHURCH AND LABOR DISCUSSED Edgar A. Perkins Says Study Should Result in Close Social Relation. The study churches are making of social and industrial relations should result in a closer understanding between the church and labor, Edgar A. Perkins, former member of the State industrial board, said in an address at the First Presbyterian Church on Sunday night on “The Church From the Standpoint of Labor.” Dr. Matthew F. Smith, the pastor, speaking on “Why the Church Is Interested in the Laboring Man,” said misunderstandings frequently have caused a rift in relations of church and labor.

BRITISH PRIME MINISTER TALKS TO KING GEORGE Baldwin May Not Tender Resignation Until Parliament Meets, By LLOYD ALLEN United Preit Corrnpondent LONDON, Dec. 10. —Premier Stanley Baldwin visited the king at Buckingham Palace today. Returning from Chequers, permanent country residence set aside for British prime ministers, the man held responsible for the British debacle in the general election, summoned his party leaders to No. 10 Downing St. After a conference which was to determine whether he should resign, Baldwin drove to the palace. The best information obtainable early this afternoo! was that Baldwin had not tendered his resignation to the King, hut had acquainted his majesty with the conservative party’s views of the situation. The Morning Post understands the summons to the palace came at Baldwin’s request. One apparently reliable report was that the prime minister intends to retain office until parliament meets. Baldwin conferred with King George for about forty minutes. Then he returned to Downing St. and immediately sent for Sir Laming Worthington Evans, secretary of state for war in 1919. The two were closeted for more than an hour. Brazil Honors Comstock Charles 11. A diploma accompanied the medal.
