Although a marked scarcity in Christmas trees has boosted the price of medium-sized trees about 50 cents, other articles for decorative purposes are about the same. Christmas trees will ccst from 60 cents for a tree three feet high to $5 for a twelve-foot tree. The latter were 84.50 last year. The Increase in price Is due to a scarcity In Alabama and other Southern States where the are obtained. It was said. Mistletoe is 50 cents a pound and holly Is 50 cents a wreath. Paper bells selling at from 15 cents to $1.70 a dozen are no more than last year. Winter Has Not Frozen Magic of De Pachmann’s Fingers
By WALTER D. HICKMAN INGERS filled with melodious magic belong to a 76-year-old ■ ■ man. His name is Vladimir De Pachmann. The winter of many years has not frozen the magic in his fingers. He may walk with an effort on the stage, but his fingers and his soul are still young. Eccentric? Yes, but it is not cheap theatrical trickery. It is the real De Pachmann. He fussed for several minutes over the position of the piano on the stage before he began to play at the Murat yesterday afternoon. He shrugged his shoulders, waved his hands, talked to the audience while the piano was being moved about the stage. “So deplorable,” he cried, when he noticed the piano was not placed so the audience could see his hands. “This is humiliating. Oh! See what they do when I’m not here. People can’t see my hands. Must see hands. “Don’t laugh. Please don't laugh at me. This Is pathetic. Laugh, no. Applaud. Yes, much as you like.” That is De Pachmann, and If it didn’t happen you would feel that the real De Pachmann was missing. Then the man began to play and talk as he played. It Seemed that Spirit of Chopin Was Close to the Piano His fingers touch the keys. “This Baldwin piano,” he whispered. "Fine tone, glorious piano. Just wait.” He told the audience that he was playing Chopin’s "Nocturne, Op. 27. No. 1, C sharp minor.” At times as the melody left the piano under his magic touch. he whispered, “Beautiful!" At times he would smile as the piano yielded to his touch Then he began “Third Ballade, Op 47, A flat

major” Something began to happen. DePachmann did not really have to tell us of the beauty of the compose tion. It seemed to go right to the heart. It seemed to me as DePachmann smiled over the results that the spirit of the great master, Chopin, must be hovering close to the player and the instrument. I am not the wise old owl on music, but I tell you what I like and think. I have heard many of the so-called “greatest” piano players. DePachmajin brought me something new yesterday—the sensation of seeing the bran of an artist working as he played great compositions. You may say that he is a strange man, eccentric just for show and boxofflee awards. I cannot agree to that argument. I heard him yesterday afternoon with a mighty large audience. The hundreds present applauded DePachmann as I have seldom heard here. I believe that his touch was marvelous. He knows music and he permits you and I to share the glory of his experience and knowledge. That is the divine gift of DePachmann. It was in the last group, including preludes, mazurka, valse and the Grand Valse, Op. 42, A flat major, that De Pachmann talked and played his way into the very heart of the vast audience. When he. played a vajse, he indicated by waving his hands that there should be a dance. I never have heard better playing than when De Pach-

mann played "Berceuse, Op. 57, D flat Major” ‘ and “Polonaise, Op. 40, No. 1, A Major.” At times he would whisper, “Sweet, so sweet,” “beautiful” and “exquisite.” Then He Played What He Wanted and Liked Best After he finished his regular Chopin program, Do Pachmann was given a tremendous ovation. Finally, he shuffiled to the center of the stage and said, “Since I play what I must, I play now what I like. Can’t talk good English. Apologize. Speak French, Italian, German, yes. Must tell you what I think.” He stated he would play one of Schumann’s. Then followed more by Schumann and “Song Without Words,” by Mendelssohn. He talked. He smiled and he talked some more.
