VERNON, Ind., Dec. 7.—Coy Gilland, 20, was sentenced to life imprisonment by Judge Clements here today for the second degree murder of Peter Schmitt. Schmitt was found in his home with his head almost cut off. last Easter. The jury returned a verdict of second degree murder late yesterday.

BERGDOLL’S ASSAILANT FACES PRISON TERM German Prosecutor Asks Three-Year Penalty for Lieut, Corliss. By United Press MOSBACH, Germany, Dec. 7.—A sentepee of three years’ imprisonment for ex-Lieut. Corliss Hooven Griffis, of Ohio, for his part in the attempted kidnaping of Grover Cleveland Bergdoll was asked by state's attornfey today. , Griffis, in liis statement to the court Thursday assumed entire responsibility for the affair, the prosecutor also asked a prison term for Griffis’ companions.

Car Is Demolished An automobile belonging to Leroy Fuller, 4311 College Ave., was demolished, the front end of one belonging to J. B. Craig, 727 Fairfield Ave., was crushed and two others slightly damaged today when the fourth car of an interurban freight carrying stock to the stockyards went off the track at Maryland St. and Kentucky Ave.
