If a dirigible an eighth of a mile in length should fly directly over a skyscraper, an observer could determine the balloon’s speed by the following method: Start counting the seconds as the prow of the balloon reaches the top of the building, and stop as soon as the stern has passed the building. Thus you have the number of seconds it took the dirigible to travel Its own length— one-eighth of a mile. Multiply by eight to find the time it takes the balloon to go one mile. Divide the total number of seconds into 3,600 to determine the number of miles per hour. Perfection Batter Makes Kiddies Grow.—Adv.
