Sweet Marion Davies Is Now Real Star; Many Real Laughs in “Gold Diggers”
By WALTER D. HICKMAN R w ~~~ OLL back the years to the day when New York City was just - little old New York. Go back to the days when Robert Fulton was working on his first steamboat. Those are the days depicted in a delicious photoplay. “Little Old New York,” In which Marion Davies plays
the chief role. Many of us thought Miss Davies had arrived in “When Knighthood Was in Flower.” Some thought that she was just a beautiful accident and were willing to see if she could repeat. After seeing Marion Davies at the Circle yesterday In “Little Old New York,” I am sure that she is no "beautiful accident.” She can act. There is no doubt to that now.
MARION DAVIES
In “Little Old New York” she does not rely upon quaint dresses and smiles to put her across to fame, but she dips her hair and wears boy's trousers in a delightful masquerade. I do not hesitate in saying that Miss Davies is now a real star. If there has ever been any doubt regarding her movie position it is fixed beyond any doubt in her latest photoplay. The story is as sweet as the sweetest perfume. It gets hold of you and will carry you back to the rays of grandmother and grandfather. Back to the days of romance and back to the days of early American invention. The quaint, dear costumes of the days gone by only increase your Interest. I was impressead with the sincerity of those in the cast. They did not appear like they were in quaint masquerade costumes, but -real men and women of a certain period of American history. In addition to the work of Miss Davies, 1 enjoyed the work done by Harrison Ford, leading man for Miss Davies; Courtenay Foote as Robert Fulton; Mahlon Hamilton as Washington Irving, Sam Hardy as Cornelius Vanderbilt, Andrew Dillon as John Jacob Astor, Louis Wolheim. remembered for his work on the stage in “The Hairy Ape,” and others. These people have lifted character acting up to the very heights. I got an awful thrill while watching the scenes showing the river journey of the first steamboat. Fine direction and photography make this scene stand out as a real accomplishment. I am sure that “Little Old New York” is a great picture. It is one that will give you great pleasure to remember. If you have faith in my views regarding the movies, then do not fail to see this one at the Circle this week. The featured musical e\-ent at the Circle this week is C. Sharpe-Minor in a novelty called “Little Old Indianapolis.” This wonder-man at the organ can find more things in an organ. This week he introduced me to sheep and pigs in an organ. Really. This man is a musical comedian. He is getting a tremendous hold upon Indianapolis audiences. We need more smiles with our music and he knows how to find them in the organ. He is sure of an ovation every time he goes to the organ. At the Circle all week. -I- -i- -I“The Gold Diggers” Is a Mighty Funny Movie We all know that "The Gold Diggers” was good fun on the stage. It is just as good fun on the screen, and that is saying a great deal, be cause the story is a hard one to film. There have been times i- the past when I have found much to object to regarding the work of Hope Hampton.
but I want to say right here and now that she does splendid work in this movie as Jerry Lamar, the chief gold digger. The test comes during the famous “souse" scene between Jerry and Steve, played by Windham Standing. She mounts to this scene with splendid understanding of what is expected. The comedy honors fall to Louise Fazenda as Mabel, who carries a

torch in a musical comedy production. I will take no credit away from Miss Hampton, but I must admit that it is Louise who walks away with the comedy honors. The sub-titles help along the laughs, as they are based upon the spoken lines in the play. The director has been wise in retaining these funny, wise cracking remarks as titles. The movie version follows closely the stage story, but some liberty is taken in introducing the characters. That is, the movie carries one actually to the theater while the stage version Just talks about the stage. On the stage I have seen two women play the role of Jerry. I think that Miss Hampton does the best work. She photographs well and is careful to wear costumes which show her off to advantage. Standing does splendidly with the hole of Uncle Steve. He starts out hard-boiled, but ends u terribly in love with the good little CW* digger. The picture has been well mounted and directed. Action is not allowed to drag, because Louise Fazenda and

her “Sweetie” are always at hand to keep one laughing. Hither think that “The Gold Diggers” will hand you one big bunch of laughs. I know It made me laugh and I have had indigestion for twentyfour hours. You 'will be interested in the news weekly, as It shows how dear old England greeted Lloyd George on his arrival home after visiting America. Lester Huff is at the organ and the new orchestra also provides music. At the Ohio all week. -I- -I- -IA Movie Is the Feature on New Bill at Lincoln Square The is the story of a constructive genius and his friend. The former has made a manufacturing metropolis nf a little town by means of his dynamic will and broad vision. He is the leading character in “The Rapids,” the feature photoplay at the Lincoln Square. The genius, Clark, is played by Harry T. Morey, who has returned to stardom in this film. Clark gives a young engineer an opportunity to enter his business and both make a big success In building the industries. They are in love with -the same girl, but their relations are not altered by that fact. And a climax solves their problem and brings the play to a satisfactory ending. Mary Astor, Walter Miller, Charles Wellesley, and Frank Knight are important members of the supporting cast. Miller as the young engineer, and Mary Astor as the girl the two men love. The vaudeville offering the first half of the week Includes Truly and Pollard, and Fred Palmer. Nixon and Norris open the show with songs and instrumental music by Nixon. At the Lincoln Square today, Tuesday and Wednesday.—(By Observer.) -I- -I- -ITom Mix Does Good Work in Movie at the Apollo “The Lone Star Ranger,” which is playing at the Apollo this week, gives Tom Mix one of the best opportunities that he has ever had in a western story'. And Mix takes this opportunity and gives a sterling performance of an interesting photoplay. There is plenty of action and several real thrills in the story. It was adapted from a story by Zane Grey, and has not lost any' of Its value on the screen. From the beginning of the play Mix has some hard riding to do, and resorts to some clever

stunts to outwit his pursuers or the men he is pursuing, as the case may be. The main character In the story is Duane, play'ed by Mix. Duane is sought by the Texas Rangers. He is finally captured, but is told that if he will round up a notorious gang of rustlers, he will be granted a parddn for his technical crime. He is assigned alone to the case, and must first discover the Identity of the criminals. The story of his work in capturing the gang is an intensely interesting one, and has some exciting scenes. And a love story develops while he Is on the man hunt. One of the best moments in the play is given when DuanA and the rangers he has called to his help lie in wait for the bandits in a little town, with Duane at the post of greatest danger. There Is a happy and satisfactory ending after the gang has been effectively broken up. This is one of Mix's best efforts. He has the excellent help of Billy Dove as leading lady, and Is supported by a good cast. An “Our Gang” comedy and a news reel complete the bill. At the Apollo all this week. —(By G. F.) -I- -I' -IHoot Gibson Has Busy Time in Movie at Isis Hoot Gibson covers a lot of territory in his latest picture, “The Thrill Chaser.” which is paying at the Isis the first half of the week.
