Indiana and Wabash Clash Promises Hard Battle at Bloomington Saturday
SCARLET INVADES I. U. • FIRST TIME IN YEARS Even Struggle Predicted as Two State Colleges Meet — Both Teams in Fair Shape for Contest. By United Press BLOOMINGTON. Ind., Nov. 14.—With a hard battle in prospect with Wabash on Saturday, Head Coach Ingram is using every minute of daylight practice time to get the team ready and, not satisfied with that, he has brought out the ghost ball and turned on the electric lights long after dark. The I. U. coaches were better satis-! ' '
fled with the Chicago game than any contest so far and were pleased v ith the spirit shown by the eleven. The only note of discouragement now is the injury to Marks, the real flasn of the Crimson attack. Marks has a side injury that probably will keep him out of the Wabash game. If he is out it will just about cut in half the attacking power of the Crimson. Marks made just about al lof the gains against Chicago. All other players are in good shape after the tough Windy City struggle. Wabash formations were urnd in practice by tne freshmen ir dummy rerimroage on Tuesday It will be the first time Wabash and Indiana have battled on the gridiron in many years. f|TWO WABASH CRIPS BACK Johnson and Thorn Recover From Injuries and Bolster Squad. By Timet Special CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind., Nov. 14.—Wabash will be In better shape to meet Indiana Saturday than at any time since the Purdue game. Johneon and Thorn are over their ailments and will get into the fray. The Chicago “V” College game last Saturday was an easy’ one as far as the Wabash regulars were concerned. Most of them did not see action In more than half of the game. There is a note of gloom in the Little Giant camp, however, in the fact that Gipson and Sherman probably are out for the rest of the season. It takes a star performer out of the back field and also the line. With not a great deal cf reserve strength to depend on the loss of two men hurt*. NOBLESVILLE H. S. the cardinal principles of Rockne’s system. He dwells on them from the time the season opens until It closes. Notre Dame's system of attack under Rockne is somewhat standardized, varying but little from year to year. Individual brilliancy is not sought. Individual stars axe subordinated to the team. Rockne is the master mechanic of football who welds the parts Into the gridiron machine. He adjusts and regulates as flaws begin to show in the inexperienced player. From time to time he adds a bit of polish here and there until he has his eleven in trim to start the season, a finished product. TALK AGAIN SAYS GIANTS MEAN TO LAND HORNSBY Despite Denials, Baseball Sharps Think McGraw Feels Need of Rogers to Counter Babe Ruth Attraction, By HENRY L. FARRELL United Press Staff Correspondent. NEW YORK, Nov. 14.—Needing new players as well as several better players with which to meet competition next year, the New York Giants, despite denials, are expected to do some more big trading or buying before the winter season is over.
As far as the reported transfer of Rogers Hornsby to New York from the Cardinals is concerned, there seems nothing to it. Owners of both dubs insist negotiations have ended, but some smart baseball men maintain they have ended only for the time being and will be resumed as soon as the Giants complete deals for one or more players on other clubs that the Cardinals want. The business side of the game is just as important in these days as the mechanical end and the Giants to hold their own in competition with the Yankees are facing the desperate need of getting some color on the National League champions. The Giants didn’t do well last season and the Yankees will be a bigger card than ever next season. Rogers Hornsby is the only player in the National League that could be built up as a counter attraction to Babe Ruth, and for this reason many baseball men here feel sure the Giants will give most anything for Hornsby after they have allowed the feeling to circulate that they have cooled on the deal. City Boxing Commission The city boxing commission held a special meeting Tuesday night, but no action was taken on applications for fistic permits.
