CORN IN COUNTY CONTEST READY FOR JUDGE’S EYE Prie-Winning Yield Is Estimated at Eighty-Five Bushels, The corn now in th ecrib, it is up t oofficials of Purdue University to determine the winners in the Marion County five-acre corn growing contest that was waged last summer under County Agriculture Agent Royal McLain. To the winner will go possession for one year of the Hence Orme prize, a large silver loving cup donated by the late Hence Orme to further interest in getting bigger yields per acre. Silver and bronze medals will be awarded also. Yield May Be Lower "I believe the winner's average will not be higher than eighty-five bushels an acre this year, as the September frost caused a 15 per cent loss in the Marion County corn crop.” said McLain. ‘‘That is pretty low. Last year the winner, 'W. S. Bowman of Warren Township, raised 100 bushels an acre.” The average yield for tM State is about forty bushels, he said, and for Marion County approximately fortyfive. Any Farmer Can Double "These corn contests have proved that the corn yield per acre can be doubled by any farmer In the county.” McLain said. “How? Better care, attention, seed and fertilizing. It takes practically no more labor to plant, tend and gather an eighty-five bushel crop than It does for a forty. The soil must be prepared just the same, the seed planted with as much effort, both cultivated, and the better crop Is usually no harder to gather, as the ears are large instead of small nubbins.” U.P. Popular Stenographer Contest Proves Active. Today is “American Legion day” at the Pure Food Show being continued this week at Tomlinson Hall under the auspices of the Indianapolis I Retail Grocers' Association. Miss Emma Brinkman, 630 Weghorst St., employed at the Fletcher Savings and Trust Company, who was leading last week took second place today when Miss Josephine Christian, 410 Sanders St., employed in the city engineer’s office, took the lead. Leaders in other contests are: William Arnold, most popular grocer: Miss Blanche Inarch, most popular demonstrator, and H. C. Adams, most popular salesman. A baby contest and special entertainment featured the afternoon program.

McCormack Touched Souls of Thousands
BY WALTER D. HICKMAN “Tramp, tramp, tramp.” Those words were “spoken" in stirring song yesterday afternoon at the Murat as John McCormack sang “When Pershing's Men Went Marching Into Picardy.” In melody the great tenor painted the picture of the young men and brave, singing as they went into battle. By melody he hurled the words “tramp, tramp, tramp” Into the very souls and hearts of the thousands present yesterday at his concert. The audience was thrilled. Armistice day had anew meaning. And then came the words from the singer, “I have seen the wooden crosses.” Tears came Into the eyes of many, hundreds I will say. Brave women attempted to wipe tears away. Real men allowed their eyes to become red. John McCormack sang this song during the war, but the response yesterday was different than he received years ago. Men and women realized a great sermon of peace in the song. John McCormack suddenly became more than the greatest tenor, he became a leader of peace and thanksgiving. ■emed to me, following the demonstration which followed this number. that McCormack had reached the peak of his concert. But something else happened. Mot heir Song Nearly Brought the Audience to Its Feet At the end of the first group of songs In the second part of his propram, McCormack turned his back on the audience and faced the hundreds of people seated on the stage. Edwin Schneider, pianist, struck the notes which announced that “Mother Machree” was to be the encore. As the marvelous voice cf the singer continued with this mother song the audience became as If only one person was present Instead of thousands. Mother love held the center of the stage. One aged couple sitting near me lovingly clasped their hands together. Many of the women seated on the stage could not keep back the tears. The song was over. McCormack stood near the Steinway piano. He bowed his head. The hands of Schneider left the instrument. A hush was over the audience. Then someone clapped their hands. Panic of applause followed. People even cheered, and that very seldom happens in an Indianapolis theater. The great moment had arrived Never hae I heard such a demonstration which the thousands accord ed McCormack after this number. He be wed time and time again Then he gave another encore. Irish Group of Song’s Was Done in McCormack's Best McCormack's Irish folk songs were done in that delicious, melodious, careASPIRIN Say “Bayer”-Genuine! bAVEfe) V M nI &) Genuine “Bayer Tablets of Aspirin' have been proved safe by millions and prescribed by physicians over twenty three years for Colds and grippe mis ery. ADVANCING years should not mean the approach of a period of dependency—of crutches and canes —of worry, care and fatigue! Don’t dread the days ahead! free way which has made the singer famous. AH of his tones were perfect. McCormack was at his best. He closed his concert with what might be called a benediction, the song being “Thanks Be to God.” The audience responded to the spiritual message with so much force that McCormack responded with another encore. I am not going into detail concerning the other numbers of McCormack. He had the assistance of Lauri Kennedy, a gifted cellist. McCormack was presented here under the auspices of Ona B. Talbot Fine Arts Association. Every seat was sold. Hundreds stood up both on the first and second floors. Several hundred chairs were placed on the stage and chairs were crowded into the orchestra pit! Never in the history of music has the Murat housed such a marvelous audience. In this little review I have tried to tell you In my own way of the two greatest moments I have ever experienced at a concert.
