Jack Donahue Brings Good Show to English’s
By WALTER D. HICKMAN. mT la my pleasant job today to report that both Jack Donahue and "Molly Darling" are satisfactory. We got acquainted with "Molly Darling” at English’s last night. It is one of those well mannered, well mounted, pretty dancing shows which relies to a great extent upon the eccentric services of one man to get the laughs. This show is strong on dancing. Donahue, besides being a clever comedian, is a first-class eccentric hoofer. Ben Benny and Burke Western have two splendid dances in the second act. Their “shoe shine” dance, as well aa their “whisk brooom” numbei, are both classics. Billy and Billie Taylor also contribute their share of good hoofing to the proceedings. Ann Miiburn plays the role of Molly, one of those sweet characters who always gets the $75,000 and fame before the final curtain, in addition to a perfectly good husband. Miss Miiburn sings pleasantly. Her chief charm rests in the fact that she does not make her character too much of sugar. It is natural musical comedy work. Among the tunes you will want to whistle are "When Your Castles Come Tumbling Down.’’ “Syncopate” and

“They Love It.” The dance numbers are cleverly introduced. One of the novelties of the show is a phonograph number as done by Miss Miiburn and chorus. I found the work of George Phelps, Rose Kessner and the others satisfactory. But I must ask the old question—why the chorus man? It is Donahue who has given “Molly Darling” whatever success it has enjoyed. He is a good showman and knows how to develop a certain brand of individual fun. “Molly Darling” is a show which the whole family will find much to enjoy. Those who like dancing shows will enjoy this one. At English’s today and Saturday. •I- -I- + Ted Healy Clowns Through New Variety Bill at Palace You are going to hear much talk about a man by the name of Ted Healy. Healy is one of those individual Anmakers who can think up an entire bill of fun. He works in pleasing nut comedy situations with Betty Healy. He clowns through the entire act of “Syncopating Toes,” in which he presents a whale of a good burlesque on a trapeze. Here is delicious fcoling. This man is a good showman now, but he will improve as he

has th© opportunity to try out new ideas. Healy has personality and he is wise enough to go In for individual fun. He is the easy winner on the new bill at the Palace. M. Alphonse Berg is again present with his exhibition of "dressmaking.” He takes pieces of goods and drapes them into pleasing gowns on living models. He also introduces models wearing new coats and dresses sold by Brosnan’s of this city. The act is well mounted. Johnson Brothers and Johnson offer a three-man minstrel show. Their singing and dancing is better than their jokes. Sankus and Silvers offer an acrobatic offering done in an oriental setting. The screen feature is Monto Blue and Madge Kennedy in “The Purple Highway.” At the Palace today, Saturday and Sunday. •I* -I* -IAttractions on view today include: “The Parsing Show of 1923,” at the Murat; “The China "Blue Plate,’’ at Keith’s; Georgia Minstrels, at the Lyric; “Hippity Hop,’ at the Capitol; stock burlesque, at the Broadway; “The Printer’s Devil,” at the Apollo; “The Americano,” at Mister Smith's; “A Chapter in Her Life,” at the Ohio; “The Merry-Go-Round,” at the Rialto; "Ponjoja,” at the Circle, and “The Grail,’’ at the Isis. Clifton, “I was understudying Mme. Scheff, while filling a small place in the chorus —a sort of pinch hitter for her, so to speak. One night while playing ‘M’lle Modiste’ Miss Scheff suddenly became indisposed and I was hustled on to play her part. Although terribly nervous, I seemed to please both my manager and the audience, and from that time on was official understudy for Miss Scheff. During my stay in her companies I played her roles in ‘M’lle Modiste,’ ‘The Little Duchf is’ ar.d ‘The Mikado.’ When the Fritzi Scheff Opera Company disbanded I went into vaudeville, where I met William K. Wells, the producer of Bubble Bubble,’ who engaged me as prima donna.” Governor to Address G. O. P. Governor Edwin P.
