— Weekly Book Review Truth Stranger Than Fiction in Anna Viroubova’s Story of Russian Court - ■ ■ ... , „
By WALTER D. HICKMAN. CT RUTH oftentimes is not pleasM j ant reading. I * i Some of us at times like our truth dressed up in the pleading attire of fiction. Anna Viroubova, at first a lady in waiting to the former Empress of Russia and afterward a personal friend of the late royal family, by writing "Memories of the Russian Court," has given the world history and not fiction. We have needed real facts on the causes of the overthrow of the Czar as well as real information concerning what actually happened in Russia during and after the revolution. It is not necessary for me to cham pion the cat ►* of Anna Viroubova, as she tells you enough to keep you thinking for months in the 399 pages of "Memories of the Russian Court. Parts of her story are so shocking ar.a so cruel that one actually hesi tates to take all of her story as history. And yet I firmly believe that Anna Viroubova has told the straight story of the fall of one of the most powerful rulers of this age. "Memories of the Russian Court is a brand nety publication of the Macmillan Company, and I believe that I am safe in saying that it is one of the most important books of the last ten years. After devoting' the greater part of three nights to this book, I wonder that the Russian revolution did not happen years ago. Although Anna Viroubova repeats her assertion that she will always love her Empress, yet she gives so many intimate views of the former Czar and his Empress that cne sees the real weakness of the entire system of government before the fall of the Czar. "It is with a prayerful heart and memories deep and reverent that I begin to write the story of my long and intimate friendship with Alex andra Feodorovna, wife of Nicholas 11, Empress of Russia, and of the tragedy of the revolution, which brought on our unhappy country such a black night of oblivion, Anna Viroubova writes as she begins her history. Viroubova Gives Room for I debate Concerning Rasputine Anna Viroubova gives her version of the power that Rasputine had over the Empress and the Czar. She maintains the Rasputine at no time exerted political influence over the policies of the late Czar. I am bound to admit that it is hard to reconcile her version of the power of Rasputine over the former ruler and his wife of all Russia with what has been printed all over the world.

And yet, I am sure that I will give the writer advantage of the doubt, because she was in a position to know what actually went on In the Russian court. Anna Viroubova introduces Rasputine with this challenge: “If I denl9d that Rasputine ever lived at court, ever had the smallest influence over governmental policies, ever ruled through adoring and superstitious women, I should not hope to be believed. I will then simply call attention to the fact that every move of Rasputine from the hour when he began to frequent the.palaces of the

grand dukes, especially from the day he met the Emperor and Empress In the drawing room of the Grand Duchess Metlltza, to the midnight when he met his death in the Yusupoff Palace on the Moika Canal In Petrograd, Is a matter of the most minute police record. The police know how many days of each year Rasputine spent in Petrograd and hew much of his time was lived in Siberia • • • Rasputine never lived in the palace, seldom visited it, saw the Emperor less frequently than the Empress, and had woman of the court more enemies than friends.” Much space is devoted to Rasputine. I can understand why Rasputine was ible to exert a certain hypnotic spell over the Empress, who was 111 most of the time and brooding over the critical condition of the Tsaxevitch, heir to the throne. It is impossible for me to go into detail concerning this lengthy and important historical book. Much space and time is devoted to Kerensky, the .Bolshevist, the grand dukes, the World War and to letters received by Anna Viroubova from the late Empress, Emperor and their children. One must remember that the author Is speaking of her dearest friends in this book and yet as you read page after page of "Memories of the Russan Court" I feel that the great majority will believe her story. At times when she admits her love for the former royal family, this admiration and love reveals the true sad life of the former ruler of Russia. , Do not think that this book is Just dry historical readings. The Czar and his family has gone through enough experiences to fill up several thousand books. I recommend “Memories of the Rus sian Court” to those who want to get closer to the real facts leading up to the Russian revolution. This book will sell into the thousands. that I have no doubt.
