Firemen, engineers and mere husbands will be enlisted In a city-wide educational campaign to make Indianapolis sootless and to battle against the H. C. of L. by reducing the coal bills. Experts of Purdue University will begin a series of public lectures within two weeks after Nov. 17, when the smoke abatement ordinance goes Into effect. The meetings will be under the auspices of the Sclentech Club and the Indianapolis chapter of the National Association of Stationary Engineers. A. W. Cole, professor of steam engineering, will give the first, address Nov. 27 at Castle Hall, 230 3. Ohio St. The meetings are in charge of Harryi O. Garman, Daniel B, Luten and* Theodore Weinshank. Mayor Lewis Shank and Building Commissioner Hamilton will be present at the first lecture. It is said. Smoke prevention not only means a cleaner, healthier city, but means a savings of coal, supporters of the educational movement declare. FARMERS OPPOSE MOVE Object to New Quarters for County Agent.

“Don't shunt the farmers to a worse place,” asked Margaret G. Mitchell, secretary of the Marion County Agricultural and Horticultural Society, of the county commissioners today in a letter protesting against proposed moving of County Agent Royal McLain’s office from Room 16 to that now occupied by the county health officer In the Courthouse basement. “If we keep heading coals of fire upon the farmer we will drive him off the farm,” the letter said. Commissioners explained they were moving McLain to give juvenile court more room. MIND TESTS FOR DRIVERS Traffic Captain Approves Detroit Anti j Accident Method. “To fire both barrels of a shotgun down Washington St. would be a more humane thing than to allow an Insane man, or one devoid of necessary faculties, to drive an automobile down the street forty miles an hour,” declared Traffic Captain Michael Glenn today in indorsing Detroit’s school and mental tests for drivers. “Child fatalities were reduced from 96 to 32 in a year with 100.000 more cars on the streets when Detroit ®ls* forced the ordinance requiring perfect physical and mental ability,” Glenn added.
